Second Language Subtitles

Post by Monte » Thu Mar 28, 2024 7:49 pm

I have the 3 disc bluray set of the 1980 TV series, "Shogun". I am running English subtitles but wanted to know how you check for the ability to have the Japanese spoken translated into English and displayed.

Thanks!

Maybe this one is what you're talking about: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Shogun-Blu-ray/103521/

Here's the entry for it at DVDCompare: https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=28217

Both of those sources indicate there's several languages of subtitles, but seemingly only the single English SDH subtitles. If that's really the case, that might be what you're stuck with.

I have some Japanese native stuff that has two different sets of English subtitles that show up as separate subtitle tracks on the disc and in the resulting .mkv file. One is seemingly made from the English dub and the other is made from the original Japanese language track. I presume it is the latter that you're looking for.

Earlier today I happened to watch a relevant Tom Scott video on YouTube on this subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU9sHwNKc2c

If you checked all subtitle tracks (and "forced only" subtracks) when you ripped the dics to mkv and no such subtitles are inluded in the resulting mkv they are not on the disc.
If there are subtitles with both the Japanese part translated and the normal dialogues you could make them yourself by editing them and deleting all non Japanese dialogues.
I think it is intended from the creator to not include any translation since the story is told from the perspective of John Blackthorne.
And most times someone translates the Japanese sentences for him.

You could check if such subtitle tracks (maybe from another release) exist on opensubtitles.org or similar sites.

When I ripped Shogun eons ago, there was a warning that the only Japanese that would be subtitled was that which the main character learned to interpret. The majority was un-subtitled, with NONE subtitled at the beginning of the series.

Thanks, everyone. No luck, so I am assuming this is just not available.
