I know that both discs I attempted had circular scratches near the edge, probably the same that other members commented on.

I was fortunate to have two different copies of this title and neither worked correctly, amd both had a very similar circular scratch near the edge. One of the discs had a few other minor scratches at other locations. I was able to get this disc copied almost to completion and at the last minute to stopped with errors.

I've had no success with getting either version of the film off either disc

I am giving up after 3 days of trying different methods: Swapping between a LG BU40N and LG BP60NB10 BD drive, using IMGBURN, DVDFAB, and MakeMKV.

The furthest I got was a 98% ISO burn with IMGBURN before READ errors re-appeared.

I've tried most of the remedies in this forum. The 4K disc just won't rip.

Based on what I've seen in this Forum, these discs have no quality control and are poorly made. I'm sending this back to Amazon for a refund.

I'll wait until later in the year to try again as they may have a better batch manufactured. I can't waste anymore time to trying to get this to work.

Good luck to everyone else!

ok, so here is the deal.

I have now made an attempt to return my second copy of the abyss, purchased at walmart, as defective - from my perspective it is defective right?

Before I tell you the punchline, as we all know, it is normal behavior for DVD/Blu-Ray/UHD returns, exchange only, correct?

Houston? We have a very strange problem. A day after release (March 13th), with Amazon being out of "The Abyss," I decided to get my copy through Target. I got it, and of course, like all ya all, I had trouble reading the 4k disc.

So, I began the return process at Target online. It started out as an exchange only transaction. By the time I completed the process, Target informed me they could ONLY refund my money because "The Abyss" was out of stock. When I got the email, it clearly stated "No need to return the product." Hmmm, that's strange, right?

I decided to get another copy through Walmart. And, like the first copy, it did not read. I am not sure why exactly. Some of you speculate defective disc, others cite it's a 3-layer issue (which could be the issue in my case).

At any rate, I decide to return this copy back to Walmart online. Same thing, they are out of stock too, so they can only offer a refund. I continue through the return process, now I am on a screen which shows me a number of stores local to me in which I can drop off the movie, which will complete the return process. Ya all with me so far? It gets better.

I complete the return online, with a final message "your money has been refunded" Wait! What about returning it to the store??

I get an email that reads "Sorry things didn’t work out. We've initiated a refund for your items with issues. Feel free to use, donate or dispose of any unwanted items – no need to return them to the store."

Can someone kindly explain to me what is going on here??

I sit with two broken 4k copies (kinda sorta) and two completely fine (working) HD copies - which looks smashing btw.

I mean, here is where I sit. After n-number of years waiting for the blu-ray edition of "The Abyss to arrive," to which the 4k edition would be a bonus right? I am perfectly happy that it's here, in my hands. But For Free!!!

WOW! Just wow!

What's to get? It's sold out everywhere and the number of us having to replace them isn't helping the stock. I'm still waiting for my replacement from Walmart and when I checked over the weekend they told me it will be at least a week before it even ships. So, yeah, is simply not available right now anywhere.

Interesting. Could you elaborate on what you did to clean them? I've done soap and water pretty rigorously but haven't had any luck with abyss. Thanks.

I tried to use Makemkv last night and it failed. After reading this thread I did not try again. Currently I am using Anydvd to rip to video. I am at 34% I started the rip process at at 11pm and it is now 9:30am. 0.42MB/s. Disc is bad.
I gave up.... hit abort and the log file popped up with 658967 lines of errors and that was at 38%

34% is where mine errored out in ImgBurn and AnyDVD trying to make a protected ISO. No amount of cleaning or different drives changed that.

I have been using a ASUS 16D1HT and a LG WH16NS40 with the Amazon version with zero success on The Abyss.
However, I was able to rip both True Lies and Aliens on the first try with the Asus.

I have a new WalMart disc arriving today, along with a BDR-13U-X from Billy. I'll try my Amazon copy first, and then the WM and report back.

Like I said in my earlier post, my issue (failed rip of 4k disk) was caused by some contamination transfer to the playing surface from the "ink" on the Bonus Features disk.

This did NOT wash away and was only removed by vigorous polishing with a glasses cleaner cloth

I had previously made several attempts to rip the disk and once the polishing was done, it ripped at the first attempt. The disk surface is now clean and mirror-like with no scratches....

Just to add my 2 cents. I tried multiple times to rip this movie on an LG WH16NS40. Failed every time. Flipped over to my LG WP50NB40. Ripped first try with no issue at all.

Hello, I frequent these forums a lot as a lurker, but wanted to share my input on this topic. I also did what some have suggested by polishing (quite profusely) and then cleaning with soap and water. Directors cut ripped the very first time after doing so. Its worth noting that I used Meguiars PlastX which is generally used to fix light scratches in plastic WITH a microfiber cloth.

Again, I was pretty rigorous with many passes, but I ALWAYS scrub back and forth from middle to outer edge. Never in a circle or along the circular contours of the disc.

I would imagine if it does not work, try giving another scrub/polish and try again.

I tried to use ImgBurn to create an ISO of the 4k The Abyss disc and it failed with a "Failed to Read Sectors" error. I have until 12 Apr to return it to Amazon. Probably worth trying an aggressive cleaning to see if that helps. I'm guessing that Amazon is just tossing these returns in the bins of stuff they sell.

Clearly, there is a serious quality control problem with the manufacturing of these discs. It's no coincidence that some are lucky to get the rip/backup when most on this forum are experiencing read problems - regardless of what method or drive is used. Inconsistent manufacturing.

Really disgusting that they are passing off this junk to the public. Maybe once they see the returns of defective discs flood back in, they will go back to figure out what has gone wrong with their QC.

IMHO, don't waste your life trying to get these to work.

(BTW, I ripped a 4K UHD disc the next day ... 1st pass, no problems)

As you tried little bit of washing up liquid and warm water, dried with a micro fibre cloth.
