I'm lucky to rip all 3 discs (The Abyss/Aliens/True Lies) from my Target purchase successfully without any issues. I used the Pioneer BDR-S13UBK that I purchased from Billy Carlson (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17831) and this drive has been working flawlessly for me.

Do these drives have to be installed inside a computer, or can they work as external drives via USB?

Got my copy from Amazon today. Tried it on my LG WH16NS60 and it just stopped halfway through ripping. No errors or anything. The disc itself stopped spinning in the drive. Also the drive seemed to be locked up for the whole computer and thought it still had the disc in it after I ejected and removed it. Had to power cycle it to get it back to responding. Tried it on my Pioneer BDR-XD08U afterwards and everything just worked (albeit slower ripping), so put me down as another user having issues on LG/Asus drives but none on Pioneer.

The disc itself had very minor circular scratches on it near the center but the behavior of the drive (stopping halfway through, no errors, not responding to anything afterwards) makes me think this is some deeper issue with the discs/drive firmware than the scratches causing the issues.

I have a WH16NS60 in a Mercury external case and was able to backup The Abyss no problems. My copy came from Disney Movie Club. It was apparently a later shipment as they only got the discs the day before the release date. Perhaps a different batch?

As I just signed up for a MakeMKV forum account, I can receive your PM, but I cannot reply. My full backup of the 4k The Abyss UHD didn't run to completion (failed about 50-55% through). I received Witness on 4K UHD yesterday and it ripped without a single problem, so I'm still thinking the 4k Abyss disc has a manufacturing/packaging problem.

I'll try the disc backup again in the next few days to see if I can get it to run to completion. If not, returning it to Amazon for a refund seems to be the only option as they are not offering exchanges, that I've seen.

I cleaned the 4k Abyss disc and tried to run a disc backup again. It ran to conclusion but failed with 46 files failing hash check. Using a WH16NS60 drive that has always been a bit picky about reading UHD discs.

No. It's a problem with the discs and/or drives.

And I was afraid of my problem happening....my replacement hasn't been shipped because it's "backordered". FFS
