Pioneer BDR-212DBK vs BDR-212V

Post by NotaNumber » Mon Feb 05, 2024 8:14 pm

Hi Everbody

I'm interested in ripping Blu-ray 3D to view on my VR headset. Since I currently do not have a 4K UHD setup (other than my VHD) 4K is not a priority.

Does anybody know what the difference is between the Pioneer BDR-212DBK and the BDR-212V? The specs look identical on the Pioneer website. Is it just the packaging?

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies.

Further research tells me that in DBK, D means the drive does not support DVD-RAM media and BK is for Black front piece color. I would guess there is also White and Grey/Putty colors available.

V stands for VinPower, a manufacturer/seller of duplication towers and software. The firmware is customized for over burning and more error checking. The latest version of VinPower's firmware for the Pioneer 212 is v1.02 showing a file date of 09/27/2022.

From what I gather from posts elsewhere v1.02 can still be flashed/crossflashed. I ordered one from Amazon. Let's see what firmware version I get and if it can be flashed.

The prices on 212s has been creeping up since I started looking at them 3rd quarter last year by $15-20.

Thanks again.

Correction, March 2022 mfg date.

Anyway, thanks to @Coopervid I was able to cross-flash the drive. Wanted to use the drive a bit to see if it was problem free. Probably be difficult to return it with a cross-flashed firmware.:
Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-S12U
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: -redacted-
Firmware date: 2022-03-07
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 81

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8F01
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-212T
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02/ID43
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Disc Information
Label: 2001_ A Space Odyssey
Timestamp: 2018-09-06 12:02:30
Protection: AACS2.0/C v65
Data capacity: 93.22 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM UHD
Number of layers: 3
Bus encryption flags: 80
Now LibreDrive is enabled and I am able to backup UHD discs. Not that it matters but I noticed the drive now supports DVD-RAM media which it didn't before with the 212V v1.01 firmware.

Note to all: Don't be too hard on newbies for not answering PMs. As a new member one has to go through a brief probation period (min number of posts) before one can PM or reply to PMs.

Following this thread, I purchased a used BDR-212V drive with a Feb 2022 date on the label but with firmware date showing as May 2022 in MakeMKV (still good).
Firmware revision is 1.02. That means I can crossflash this drive to be able to read UHD discs, right?
Can somebody help me with the procedure?
Thanks for the help!

Just want to thank Cooper who helped me with updating the FW on this drive to make it a Libredrive
Big thanks

Edit to add
This drive maybe the only pioneer drive currently available off the shelf retail new to be able to enable Libredrive for UHD purposes.
It seems Amazon USA and Canada have a prime seller with plenty of stock at fw 1.02 at a very reasonable 80 bucks, even though outside of drive is is labelled Feb 2024, so don't get put off by data on outside of drive till you actually have Makemkv analyze it
