Newbie - Drive Advice Needed

Post by Edgeyboy » Wed Mar 06, 2024 9:24 am

Hi, Juts about to begin my journey into ripping 4K UHD Discs onto a hard drive. I want the simplest, least faff solution. Are there any external drives available off the shelf that don't require flashing etc? Thank you for any help you can offer. I am based in the UK.

The Verbatim 43888 will work out of the box for UHD discs. The Verbatim 43888 has a Pioneer UD04 drive inside it.

It should be noted that the quality of those drives has gone down recently. That isn't to say that if you buy one new today that it will be broken in the box or that it will fail early, but the odds of that are higher than with other options. Unfortunately I don't know enough to be able to quantify the likelihood of failure. If you want to read more about the quality of the 43888: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27378&p=149329#p149329

The highest quality option would be to buy a proper Pioneer drive. Unfortunately the current Pioneer firmware is incompatible with MakeMKV for ripping UHDs (the drives can rip DVDs and regular blu-rays just fine). There are sellers on this forum that can source new Pioneer drives with older compatible firmware that will work well. Asmcom is the seller for the UK https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19387.
