having trouble merging 2 disc movie and need some help.

hey I'm trying to merge the 2 discs for my lord of the rings bluray that I ripped but I'm having some trouble. I'm using mkvtoolnix added the first part as a source file in the multiplexer tab right clicked on it and appended the second part ran it but it immediately failed giving me the error

"Files cannot be appended to themselves. The argument for '--append-to' was invalid."

You say "merge the 2 discs"? What do you mean? What have you ripped, the whole disc to a folder or an ISO? If you've ripped main movie only to .mkv then the procedure you outline should work fine in MKVToolnixGUI. If you do mean trying to join two .mkv's are you sure you did the procedure correctly? And for simplicity have you renamed the .mkv's - Part1.mkv Part2.mkv and join to LOTRJoined.mkv or similar, you can always rename your completed file to whatever you choose.

You are talking about the extended editions here - spread across two discs?

You could also use ffmpeg to merge the two files. Here's a Stack Overflow post with someone trying to do something similar with MKV files:

I merged LOTR using mkvtoolnix so I know that it can be done.
Check that not only the two input files have different names but also that the nominated output file name is different.

Can also confirm that TLOTR 4K Extended Editions join perfectly using MKVToolnix (append) as I've just ripped/joined them. Didn't make any fuss cutting and joining as I see nothing wrong with a couple of seconds black screen at the join. May not be of any use to anyone but this is the info, ripped with THD Atmos and AC-3 audio and English subs.
