Can't rip one track from DVD

#1 Post by Elephen » Thu Jan 25, 2024 8:42 pm

Hello,

I have not been able to rip one track from one new DVD in a multi-DVD set. I have cleaned the disk four times with denatured alcohol, have used cell trim, cell walk, and cell full, and have downloaded MakeMKV version 1.17.6. This disk does not have any obvious signs of damage. Attached is the log.txt. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

^ I don't think I've seen that error before. In any case, all the subsequent errors seem to be that the drive disappeared from the system. It looks like you're running a Pioneer BDR-212UBK on an Apple Silicon Mac, which means the drive is almost assuredly in an external powered enclosure. So the obvious candidate of the drive is running out of power seems unlikely.

Are you writing the output to a local volume or something on the network? What happens if you select the output to be your Mac's internal storage?

Hello.

Yes, I have a M1 Mac mini and Pioneer blu ray drive with an external power supply. When ripping, I usually write the output to my NAS. After reading your reply, I tried writing to my Mac, but experienced the same result.

When MakeMKV was unable to rip the file just now, I tried to get MakeMKV to open the Pioneer drive, but kept getting the message that the drive is unmounting. It never did, so I quit MakeMKV. Thereafter, when I tried to open the drive via my Mac, the Mac apparently did not see the drive. Rebooting my Mac usually fixes that problem.

Have you tried power cycling the optical drive? Rebooting your computer generally doesn't power cycle an external optical drive. If you've got a power switch on the enclosure, turn it off for a few seconds, then turn it back on. There's a tiny computer in the optical drive that runs the firmware and it can occasionally get into a bad state. This is common with LG or ASUS drives, but rarely happens with a Pioneer. I also have a Pioneer BDR-212UBK and I think mine has gotten into a bad state perhaps twice in the 2+ years I've had it.

I keep the on/off switch in the Off position except when I’m using the drive. In other words, I have to turn the drive On each time I want to use it. Does this information affect your suggestion?

That means you are 'rebooting' the drive relatively often, so disregard my suggestion. In my case, I leave the drives on, forever, until something bad happens and I have to power cycle them.

When you tried with your output folder pointed at local storage, you got the same error?

Code: Select all

002003:0000 Error 'OS error - (ipc/send) invalid destination port' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB' at offset '71565312'
Do you also get the same error if you try to create a decrypted backup of the disc?

I don't know how to create a decrypted backup of the disc, but wrote the file to my Mac a second time. Attached is the log error file.

^ that's all I see in the log. By default, MakeMKV overwrites the existing log every time it is started.

To make a decrypted backup, start MakeMKV, put in a disc, let MakeMKV read it but do not click the giant disc icon that reveals the contents of the disc. Instead, click the icon near the top of the window of a yellow folder with a green arrow pointing into it. Make sure the decrypt option is checked on the window that pops up.

Making a backup copies the entire contents of a disc to your storage. In the case of blu-rays & UHDs, it puts everything in a folder. For a DVD, it creates an .iso file. MakeMKV can then open the backup and process it just like from the disc directly.
In my experience, sometimes there are different results of trying to rip from the disc directly versus making a backup then making .mkv files from the backup. Probably, you'll get the same error trying to made a backup… but maybe not.

Hello.

Creating the .iso file also failed. I copied the following text from MakeMKV:

That error is more straight forward and implies the optical drive was unable to correctly read a spot on the disc.

Unfortunately my only suggestions now involve trying a different copy of the disc or trying the same disc on a different drive. In my experience, some drives just don't seem to like some discs. I have multiple drives and when a disc doesn't work in a drive, it often, but not always, works in a different drive.

That's the only suggestions I have left.

First, I thank you for spending so much time trying to solve this puzzle.

Second, when I found your latest reply (I’m no longer getting a email regarding such replies), I was watching the particular episode via my Oppo 4K player. Usually that device will read a problem disc that my external bluray player can’t read. Several minutes into the episode, the video hesitated and skipped forward. So, it turns out that this disc is defective. I will try to get a replacement. If this type of problem appears again, I will watch the episode on my Oppo player to see if the disc plays correctly. Thanks again for your help.
