External blu ray player needs firmware updates for MakeMKV?

I've been using an Asus SBC-06D1S-U successfully with my MBP. The drive failed in a matter of weeks after my purchase, though I was able to get it replaced under warranty. I haven't tested the replacement yet.

With my iMac, I use an LG BH10LS30 which I placed in an ICY BOX IB-550StUS2-B-BL USB2/eSATA enclosure. Despite being a desktop drive, it's hardly any faster than the Asus (I haven't bothered to patch the firmware to remove Riplock), but it's actually a bit less noisy (when placed on a wood surface).

Is the ICY BOX required?

No. If you don't want to use this enclosure, you have two options:

1) open your iMac and hope there's an available SATA port on your logic board

2) get another external enclosure of your choice (with SATA - to connect the drive - and USB or FireWire to connect the enclosure to your Mac)

Ok. Why is an enclosure with SATA needed, i thought you just plug the external in through USB and thats it.

The LG BH10LS30 is an internal drive. Hence the need to buy an enclosure. It's usually cheaper than buying an external drive.
