This Dolby Vision "affair" is becoming more and more complicated and difficult for us common people.

Yeah feels like we need a completely new thread with more organized instructions. Do we even consistently get better image with dolby vision compared to hdr10 at this point? I honestly have no idea.ragico wrote: Thu Jan 04, 2024 11:50 pm This Dolby Vision "affair" is becoming more and more complicated and difficult for us common people.

If you're using an LG or Panasonic TV with a color-accurate TV-led player, the answer should always be yes, as long as the metadata used was intended for what is being played.deadchip12 wrote: Fri Jan 05, 2024 8:37 amYeah feels like we need a completely new thread with more organized instructions. If you use a Sony A95K, you're better off with Dolby Vision. I'm guessing the A95L will also be in this situation once Sony fixes its Dolby Vision EOTF tracking (it currently requires Gradation Preferred for accuracy, which sounds like it uses Sony's Tone Mapping instead of Dolby Vision).
If you're using pretty much any Sony TV other than the A95K that is TV-led capable, then most have issues with their Dolby Vision base configuration data. Unless you can measure your specific panel or see measurements from someone else who has measured, you may be better off using HDR10 with Sony's Gradataion Preferred tone mapping.
If you're using any Sony TV that is only Player-led capable, it also depends on your playback device (many playback devices aren't up to the task from RESET's research). If your Sony TV is only Player-led capable, it likely has less luminance and color volume and can significantly benefit from Dolby Vision's tone mapping. Still, I'd measure it regardless since Sony has a history of striking out with Dolby Vision.
If you're using any other TV brand, there isn't enough data to determine what's best. I'm unaware of anyone doing deep analysis on Hisense, Vizio, TCL, and Philips TVs since most enthusiasts are on LG, Sony, and Panasonic TVs.

one thing is for sure, if your TV has an edid higher than 1000nits (majority of the TVs nowadays), don't use the cmv2.9 devices that cannot do true TV-LED (zidoo, dune, ugoos, homatics etc..), they are completely broken.

and the fact that the zidoo and vertex guys recommend using 1000nits edid for LLDV in HDR10 playback is hilarious.

How can I know the edid of my TV?
If the edid is higher than 1000 nits, what to do with homatics, ugoos, zidoo, firestick, dune, etc boxes? Trow away in garbage? Or use it only for non DV formats?
As I understand only Sony x700 and X800m2, Oppo 2003 and ATV latest generation can do real TV led. Am I wrong?

I dont know if there is a free way of getting your TV edid info. I use the vertex and I can also get the edid with a cheap raspberry pi and PGenerator: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/dedica ... 5/#replies
if the RPU is 4000nits it's fine but if the RPU is 1000nits like the majority of the movies, do not use DV on those devices. If the edid is higher than 1000 nits, what to do with homatics, ugoos, zidoo, firestick, dune, etc boxes? Trow away in garbage? Or use it only for non DV formats?
Yes, all the bluray players should support TV-LED and AFAIK for the media player, only the shield and ATV support it.As I understand only Sony x700 and X800m2, Oppo 2003 and ATV latest generation can do real TV led. Am I wrong?

Is the Homatics Box R 4K Plus definitely one of these that is completely broken when the MDL >1000-nits?
If not, which Homatics device are you referring to?
Asking because I thought the Homatics S905X4-K devices were CMv4 devices.

I'm referring to whatever model @dmdreview tested in his video. You can ask him, I don't have this device.

I looked closer and he says in the video description (not in the video itself) that it is the Homatics Box R 4K Plus. That's the latest Amlogic S905X4-K that's being used in all the current SEI804HM devices (Homatics, Dune, Nokia, Rocktek).RESET_9999 wrote: Fri Jan 05, 2024 7:15 pm I'm referring to whatever model @dmdreview tested in his video. Zidoo can save TV edid. Zidoo can set customised edid. If my TV is 2000nits and I set Zidoo edid to 1000nits, would it work?RESET_9999 wrote: Fri Jan 05, 2024 4:27 pm if the RPU is 4000nits it's fine but if the RPU is 1000nits like the majority of the movies, do not use DV on those devices.

If you want a Player-led device then I think you'd just be significantly better off picking up a 23AFTVS4KM (2023 Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max) and loading Kodi on it. You also even run PKC (PlexKodiConnect) on it. That'll give you Atmos TrueHD passthrough with the most accurate Player-led luminance RESET has tested.susanstone2022 wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:10 amZidoo can save TV edid. @RESET_9999 have you been able to test the color saturation/accuracy on the 23AFTVS4KM?

With a 2000nits TV, you don't need DV for 1000nits movies(and for most of the movies). A 1000nits edid would be a bad idea because then any shot over 1000nits would be tonemapped to 1000nits while your tv is capable of displaying it untouched. HDR content is graded brighter than the MDL sometimes.susanstone2022 wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:10 am Zidoo can save TV edid. Zidoo can set customised edid. Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
I noticed some extra saturation compared to other devices. I might not investigate this any further since I don't really care about a device that cannot do tv-led. Also, the Firestick devices are doing some Dolby Vision IQ internally even when your TV DV IQ is disabled. If you take quietvoid's L11 test file, it is supposed to work only when your TV(LG) is in Cinema Home mode with DV iq enabled.speeddemon wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 6:41 am @RESET_9999 have you been able to test the color saturation/accuracy on the 23AFTVS4KM?
For DV MKV playback, I've been using my C2 internal player lately. It seems stable and it works very well, at least for the 3 movies I watched so far.
You have to sideload Kodi in developer mode but it's not too complicated to do and its pretty nice to finally have DV MKV support on LG TVs.

Happy New Year.
Just to clarify when I use the DoVi scripts to plot a UHD disc with Profile 7 FEL the graph is using all the Profile 7 FEL layer metadata?
