Lost UHD support on flashed drive

Post by knyght1 »

Any reason I suddenly lost the ability to read UHD on a flashed drive? Never had an issue until recently (Oppenheimer & Mission Impossible 7). And I tried multiple discs for each. Won't recognize the disc at all. Just spins and eventually ejects the disc.

If external, power down the drive for ~a minute.

If internal, power down the PC for ~a minute.

Restore power & retry.

Tried that. Still doesn't recognize UHD. Works flawlessly with all BD.

Could it need to updated? or re-flashed?

I know people aren't fans of these LG drives but seems odd that it used to read UHD and works great with BD.

Had the blue laser gone kaput, BDs would be a no-go. For the sake of being thorough, have you retried any discs you've previously ripped successfully?

I just tried Avengers: Endgame 4K and it recognized it right away. So just the new ones I'm having an issue with.

Gently clean one of the problem discs... lint-free cloth, mild dish soap 1st if it's stubborn.

I tried that. Both discs are brand new. I even returned them both and got new discs. Same thing.

Just to be clear, it's not "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted", but a "No disc inserted", correct? Lately, there can be a number reasons for a "The volume key is unknown..." msg.

There is no error message. The drive just spins and spins and eventually gives up and ejects. Never mounts the disc nor does MakeMKV ever provide an error message.

Could be grounds for cleaning the drive optics? @Billycar11, or @MartyMcNuts might be able to offer some guidance? I've exhausted my conventional wisdom... & there's a Nor'easter brewin'.

you can take the drive apart and clean the laser but most people dont do it
but yeah eject the try use a plastic pry tool pop off the bezel clips on the 2 sides and bottom then 4 screws on the bottom and the the top will wiggle off then you can see the lasers
dont use one of those cleaning discs they wont do anything for you

@Billycar11 does it seem plausible that the optics need to be cleaned when it reads all BD and reads older UHD? To be clear it is not a situation where it needs to be re-flashed or updated if that even exists?

Usually, UHD discs need to be cleaned because they are brand new.

Also, it could just be the case where that drive just doesn't like that particular disc. As silly as it sounds, it does happen occasionally. Can you test that problem disc in another drive?
Cheers :D

Yeah that happens all the time that new discs need to be cleaned
