Which external blu ray player would work best with my mac?
I'm in the market to get one but im not sure which is the best for its price. All I plan on using for is ripping them to my mac with MakeMKV. Right now im look at these two:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Blu-ray-Drive-Playe ... 963wt_1272
OR
http://cgi.ebay.com/LG-CH08LS10-8x-Blu- ... 110wt_1039
Are either of these any good?
Im leaning toward the first one because I've read some compatibility issues with the LG. Reviews have said that LG has a compatibility issue with Snow Leopard. Anyways feel free to tell me which external drive your using and if you have any suggestion. I am looking for one in the price range of the two listed above. Also, do some external players display better picture quality than others?

Re: Which external blu ray player would work best with my ma
Hi,
I have been happily using the following LG Blu-Ray drive for about 2 years: HL-DT-ST BD-RE GGW-H20L. I rip blu-ray and DVD with it as it is 2x as fast as the Apple superdrive that came in my Mac Pro. No compatibility problems ever encountered with MacOS, MakeMKV, iSkysoft products, AUNSoft products or Ripit. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the recommendation but I can't seem to find this model on Amazon or Ebay. I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide a link. Thanks in advance.TheOneAndOnly wrote:Hi,

Hey have you experienced any issues with Cinavia? Have you tried ripping movies like "The Losers or Battle LA" with this player?Romansh wrote:Search for GGW-H20L.

Re: Which external blu ray player would work best with my ma
Hi,
I've bought an USB2 external Blu-ray player (Model N° Silverstone SST-S05).
I have no problem until 1.6.4 and the new DASPI 1.2 driver to manage the direct access of the drive.
Since the last release I use MakeMKV under a Parallels VM under Seven to rip my BD and it works....!
I've posted a topic but there is no solution for today...
Recently I reinstall my iMac with a clean installation of Lion.
So I think my player was not compatible with the DASPI drivers....
Then I am interested to find a new BD drive (player or burner) but which run well with MakeMKV...
Thanks for your help
Vincent

This is the one I use and has been flawless for about 30 bluray backups so far. Got it at my local computer shop for $62.

I don't do any playback on the mac. Just rip with MakeMKV and convert to ATV2 with handbrake.

You have the same blurry player Silverstone ? And you haven't any problem with to ? Or you have the Asus model ?
Thanks for your precisions...
best regards.

I'm using the LG BP06 External Bluray Writer. Does not need any external supply apart from USB. Works nicely with MakeMKV.

Just ordered this drive, do you have the daspi driver thingy installed with this?cjsiv wrote:This is the one I use and has been flawless for about 30 bluray backups so far. Got it at my local computer shop for $62.

Re: Which external blu ray player would work best with my ma
I have one of this and since upgrading to both MakeMkv 1.6.16 an to Lion 10.7.2 with or with out the daspi drivers my performance really sucks. I cant get over 0.3X for any sustained period of time. It take 5 hours to rip a Bluray disk! I can probably find an old install but can't go back to Snow Leopard.Squirrellydw wrote:Just ordered this drive, do you have the daspi driver thingy installed with this?cjsiv wrote:This is the one I use and has been flawless for about 30 bluray backups so far. Grrrrr....
Re: Which external blu ray player would work best with my ma
Sorry...haven't checked the forums in awhile. I am using 1.6.16 with Lion and have had no issues. I use the DASPI driver. I had some issues with ripping before I installed it. I am up to roughly 70 blurays backed up from my collection and all have been flawless.

With my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.2) I successfully use a Samsung SE-406AB (available on Amazon.co.uk — but I bought it from an Italian store for €73.60).
Saving a MKV file from a BD with MakeMKV takes a bit more than an hour.
Also, movies can be viewed in Mac OS directly from BD through VLC (although it's a bit clumsy).
