How to rip Blu Ray into 720p instead of 1080p?
Hi Guys,
Can someone tell me how can I rip Blu Rays into 720p format??
1080p format takes too much space.
Help is greatly appreciated.

the beauty of makemkv (for me) is that it simply rips directly from the disc with no conversion whatsoever. I tried several rippers before that insisted on changing the format when ripping, which took hours.
so if the disc is 1920x1080, the rip will be the same.

I think the smallest I've seen is 13 gigs, but they seem to average about 25 gigs (somewhere between 20-30).
and that's main movie only, not counting any extras.

If you look the movies from Rapidshare or Filesonic ,, you can download per movie about 6 gig for 720p.
How can I rip it around 6 gig???

your problem is resolution != to quality. bit rate has most to do with quality. so those rips have really low bit rates and don't look as good (they look like garbage imo). at any rate, judging from your questions, makemkv is not for you. you want a ripper that re-encodes. here are articles about the why bit rate (and therefore big files) matters for quality:

ok as an example I looked up a torrent of the latest bluray I ripped (The Chaperone). The 720P torrent I looked at had a 739kbps bit rate. My rip has a 30,000kbps bit rate. the large file sizes have the data which makes HD, HD. these rips are so low quality it's a crime (literally and figuratively).

When I re-encode to 720p, I generally use about 4000-5000kbps and convert the audio to 640kbps AC3. The resulting file is usually about 2-2.5GB per hour. But it takes about 2X the length of the movie to encode it properly, and thats with 8 cores chugging alongreebok wrote:ok as an example I looked up a torrent of the latest bluray I ripped (The Chaperone). wow, that's even longer than I thought. this may be a dumb question, but does the software even support 8 cores?BlackDragon24 wrote:When I re-encode to 720p, I generally use about 4000-5000kbps and convert the audio to 640kbps AC3. Depends on what software you are using.
MakeMKV is just ripping the disc. You want to transcode the content to a different size. You can check at VideoHelp for Video Converters. Some are more threaded than others.

If you wan advice on settings lemme know.
For audio I use clownbd.

It can take any audio format and convert it to 640kbps AC3, which for my purposes is more than enough.
