One Corrupted Disc of Band of Brothers Set

Hi.

I have a two sets of Band of Brothers series (6 discs pack for each one) One is a blue-ray set and the other is just a standard DVD set. I DO NOT have a blue-ray and so am ripping the standard DVD disc so I can watch them via my private Plex server. I was able to rip 5 of the 6 discs without any issues but the first disc is corrupted. It would only convert just half the discs and then stop ripping.

I followed all the steps about cleaning the disc. I can a very small nick in the middle and I don't think that it can be repairable.

I don't have the means to buy another dvd set nor purchasing a blue-ray dvd rom for my computer.

Are there any other alternatives to just rip that first disc or maybe a way repair it?

That log indicates that the optical drive was unable to correctly read that spot on the disc. You mentioned you think you have a scratch (or other physical damage) to the disc?

Band of Brothers (2001) is ten episodes, so I'm guessing there's two episodes per disc plus some 'extras' on the sixth disc? If you try to rip the titles individually in MakeMKV, you can probably get everything except the title affected by the scratch on the disc. Perhaps it won't be one of the 10 episodes of the show.

I tried as you suggested with no success.

I tried copying the files from the disc to my harddrive and two of the files did not copy over as it was not readable or is corrupted. The following two files that did not copy over are:

VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB

I guess I am going to have to buy another set. Too bad I can't purchase a individual disc of Part 1 and Part 2 only.

Your log indicated it was having trouble with VTS_01_1.VOB.

Did MakeMKV have similar looking logs for VTS_01_2.VOB & VTS_01_5.VOB?

Also, in this case, perhaps your local library might have a copy of this on DVD you could check out?

In regard to error log for MakeMKV, no. They are different and I'm not sure why that is. Any thoughts?

Without seeing the log, I can speculate that there's more than one problematic spot on the disc.

My log is below but I have a question: Is it possible to rip the Blue-ray files if I were to copy the disc's files over to my computer hard drive and then use MakeMKV to rip it from there?

Maybe.

The best way to do this is to use MakeMKV and create a decrypted backup (the icon of a yellow folder with a green arrow). That'll properly copy all of the files on a disc over to a computer's storage, removing the encryption along the way. In the case of blu-rays it'll verify that what gets read off the disc is correct. If the disc uses bus encryption, it'll be overcome. The resulting folder structure is something that can be copied around, used in that form, or opened again in MakeMKV so individual .mkv files can be made.

I didn't mention this before, but I guess I would need a Blue-ray dvd player on my computer in order to read it, right? I only have a standard cd-rom.

Yes. Blu-rays are read with a different frequency of light than CDs or DVDs. Pretty much every drive that can read blu-rays can also read CDs and DVDs, as they have two different lasers.

If you want a drive that can also read 4K Ultra High Definition blu-rays, there's a list of drives in the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide thread. In order to be able to rip UHDs, you need the right drive with the right firmware.

If you have no intention of ripping UHDs, the requirements for regular blu-rays or DVDs are much less strict. More or less any modern blu-ray capable drive will work (as well as probably any blu-ray capable drive from the last 10 years if you've got one gathering dust in an old computer).
