None of my Blu-ray MKV's will play on my WDTV Live :(
Hi there,
I have just started using MakeMKV because I recently bought a WDTV Live. All MKV's I download from the internet play fine on the player but any Blu-ray's I rip with MakeMKV won't play properly on my WDTV Live. They will play for a few seconds or maybe even minutes but then the picture freezes and that's it. Standard definition DVD's play absolutely great after ripping with MakeMKV however.
I'm using an Acer Aspire 6920G laptop which has an Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500A ATA drive in it.
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64Bit. I have the latest version of MakeMKV.
Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?

MKV files made with the latest version (1.6.10) have also given me issues on my WD TV Live.
For now you may wish to install 1.6.8 from here: http://www.makemkv.com/download/old/Set ... v1.6.8.exe
And try again. 1.6.8 makes files which will work on your WD TV Live.

do you guys think its worth waiting until makemkv is totally finished before ripping collections of Blurays? Ive just started mine and was thinking of selling the disks after but might hold off for a while as I keep seeing issues on these forums.

I've already done my ever-growing collection. MakeMKV will never damage the audio, video or subtitle streams. If you do rip with a version of MakeMKV that later turns out to be buggy, you can demux all the streams and remux with something like MKVmergeGUI and the problem will be solved.

1. having worked in the IT industry for 40 years, if you wait for perfect software you will never get anywhere.DaxInside wrote:do you guys think its worth waiting until makemkv is totally finished before ripping collections of Blurays? 2. for "most" people many of the bugs here are not likely to effect them - you have to have pretty precise requirements (by the way I accept that some people due have higher expectations, so this is not a knock off!)
3. Mike is pretty good at fixing things - a fact that is pretty unusual in this software industry - and yes I am showing my bias!
4. there are usually ways around most problems.
I have something like 240 dvd/Bluray films on my NAS boxes and so far I have been quite happy - now my Dune media player firmware and the software for creating my disk library is something different - but thats life!!

@DaxInside
Hi!
You may not be aware that if you sell the original, commercial Blu-ray discs, you would have no legal right to keep the copies of them that you make/made...

You may not be aware that the DMCA makes it illegal to remove the copy protection, so every time you convert a disc using MakeMKV, you are breaking the law. So if you own 100 discs and make MKV's out of all of them, you could go to jail for 500 years if they catch you.setarip_old wrote:@DaxInside

MakeMKV is made by a Russian software company and therefore not bound by the laws of the USA, particularly the DMCA. It would be illegal for them to even develop software such as this in the USA, and it is still something of a grey area if it is even legal for you to own it in the USA, even if you aren't using it.
Once you start down the path of ripping movies off disc, the legality of anything you are doing related to that endeavor pretty much goes out the window. Its all illegal. You just have to decide for yourself whether its unethical or immoral, and how far you go before you cross that line (or if you are worried about jail, how far you can go before a jury thinks you crossed that line).
But from an ethical standpoint, before the DMCA, there was the Fair Use Doctrine. This was the law for many years and is still in effect today. Under the fair use doctrine, it was considered legal for you to record a copyrighted show off TV, and keep it for personal use. It was even legal for you to make a copy of that copy, and give to a friend, as long as you did not profit. So you could pay $40 a month for HBO, tape one movie a day, and be legal, assuming it was used privately and not for profit. You did not need to own the original source material. Not really any different than taking a Netflix disc, making a copy, and returning it. You end up with the same thing, a copy without owning the source. And in todays terms, sharing it with a friend means a torrent. Fair Use was considered ethical at the time (the MPAA even supported it because it was key in making VCR's a viable product, thus creating a market to sell movies to people at home, further allowing movie companies to profit by creating a new source of revenue for their movie vaults), and the only thing that has changed is the technology. Ripping a Netflix disc and sharing by torrent is ethically no different than recording it off HBO (digital or analog recording methods) and putting a copy on VHS or DVD to give to a friend.
All that has changed is that the DMCA made it illegal to bypass or remove content protection methods, if they are deployed by the copyright holder. So owning a copy of a movie, without owning the original disc could still be legal under the current Fair Use laws (assuming private use and non-profit, and how you came to own it). However, removing the copy protection to get that copy off the disc is illegal in the US. So you go to jail for using MakeMKV to remove disc encryption, not for owning copies of a movie without an original source.
I personally choose to keep my original source discs, so that when things come along like the bugs I am finding in MakeMKV, I have an original disc that I can go back to and correct the problem. I currently have over 3000 MKV's (splitting TV shows by episode really ratchet up the numbers) and the thought of trying to reacquire hundreds of discs to correct an error is equally as frightening as the though of spending the time to re-convert all those discs. Put the two together and it would be a total nightmare.

I don't know that your statement is true. In the testing I have been doing with Mike, we have already uncovered that MakeMKV is doubling the headers on H264 streams (which Mike says shouldn't effect playback). It would be interesting to demux and remux those again with MKV Merge to see if it cleans up the double headers or keeps them.crowfax wrote:I've already done my ever-growing collection. But more disturbing is that with 1.6.10, that at least on DTS-HD tracks (the only ones we've tested so far), the streams output by MakeMKV do not match the streams from the original source. I don't think Mike has tracked down what is different yet, as we just uncovered that behavior on Tuesday.
At this point, MakeMKV could be potentially altering DTS-HD streams, and demuxing them does not return them to a state where they match the original source. It could be a simple thing such as double headers again, or something more serious like an alteration of the stream. I don't think we know yet.
Never is a pretty strong word...

That's true, but it shouldn't cause any problems at all.KYThrill wrote:I don't know that your statement is true. I agree, this is very alarming, but so far you're the only one who sees that behavior.KYThrill wrote:But more disturbing is that with 1.6.10, that at least on DTS-HD tracks (the only ones we've tested so far), the streams output by MakeMKV do not match the streams from the original source. For history of MakeMKV it never damaged stream contents. The biggest problem was 1.6.9 that created a very broken MKV files, yet the could be demuxed and repaired with mkvmerge.

as this thread has gone a little off topic ill continue
Any thoughts on when MakeMKV might be out of beta?

I may be the only person in the world who is so anal retentative that they have to extract their streams after a conversion to make sure all the streams remained a 1:1 copy with the source, and this testing could prove that.mike admin wrote:That's true, but it shouldn't cause any problems at all.KYThrill wrote:I don't know that your statement is true. Only Mike can say!DaxInside wrote:Any thoughts on when MakeMKV might be out of beta?
Good software should always be evolving. I have less issues with MakeMKV than I do with other software which isn't marked as beta.
