USA equivalent of Verbatim 43888 Slim USB blu-ray drive

#1 Post by guho0 » Fri Aug 04, 2023 1:42 pm

What is the USA equivalent of Verbatim 43888 Slim USB Blu-ray slim external USB drive, which appears to be a model for Europe/Australia and other places? Must have a Pioneer BDR-UD04 inside for makemkv UHD compatibility, not BDR-UD03. Model numbers I've seen here in the USA:
Verbatim 71097, 70102, 71094

There is none. Verbatim uses the UD03 in their top model in the US and this drive can't read UHD.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. I have ordered a 43888 from overseas. Hopefully it works, as returns will be tough.

Billy, these Verbatims with UD04 are much cheaper than the current ones in the US. 100 Euros plus shipping to the US. So approx. US$130. And the UD04 doesn't need to be flashed.

How'd that overseas drive order work out for you? I see this in the Amazon.UK store: https://amzn.eu/d/76YOqtf 120 Pounds plus 15 Pounds for US delivery...

Hi Billy

I sent you an email. I want to buy the UHD drive from you. As am a new registered user, I'm unable to PM here.

Just following up. Made my purchase from Amazon.uk, delivery to Buffalo NY was only 15 pounds added to the cost of the drive. Well under $200 total. Drive shipped from a supplier in France, tracking was supplied but really didn't offer much for tracking. Last update was from four days ago saying it either arrived in France or departed France, wasn't clear which, and it arrived today.

Anyway, it's here. This is MakeMKV's summary of the drive straight out of the box:

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-UD04
Revision: 1.14
Serial number: ################
Firmware date: 2020-06-15
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 75

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8A10
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-US04
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.14
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

No disc inserted

Tested it out on a 4K that my Asus full-size 5.25" drive struggled with and so far, so good. Very pleased with my purchase and can recommend the Verbatim 43888.
