Hi, this is my first time here so there are probably going to be some spots in my knowledge.
I'm looking to get a Pioneer drive that I can just purchase and will work with ripping pretty much any content.
- I live in Japan and so getting my hands on second-hand Pioneer drives with older firmware is not a problem.
- I use macOS
I'm looking to get a BDR-XD07J-UHD (should just be the Japanese version of the BDR-XD07UHD) with a manufacturing date on the back of the drive that reads March 2018.
Would this be a good choice? I would really appreciate if I can get opinions on this.
that would work long as someone didn't update it for you
Thanks for the quick and informative response!
Also, is buying a new BDR-XD08UMB-S a good idea? I don't have any UHD Blu-rays to rip at the moment, so I'd only need it as a feature in the future. I'd want to be able to use MakeMKV to rip some HD Blu-rays though.

So to clarify, if it has firmware that is too recent, then it won't be able to be used with MakeMKV to rip any Blu-rays at all?

UHD blurays
Are there any estimates as to how long we could expect to wait for UHD blu-ray ripping to be supported?

Saw that Amazon had a S13U in the 'amazon renewed' section and gave it a go as it was discounted and had a chance of being a drive with older firmware.. Annnnd it wasn't. 1.04 Dec 12 2022.
So if you see a Pioneer on Amazon, even the returns, it is probably best to assume it has the bad firmware and don't bother. Only buy from the guys here that have the known-good units.

No, not currently supported as the firmware is DEC 2022+. You could be waiting quite a while for that to be supported..
Cheers
