DVD & chapter stutter

Guys

Love the product, has much simplified the problem challenge around converting my DVD collection and am particularly keen on the mkv format.

However, I have a problem, the mkv's created, have all of the attributes, subtitles, the works, even the chapters.

I have noticed on movies (Bad Company - Region 1) where there is a very clear and obvious stutter on each of the chapter marks.

I've ripped quite a number of DVD's and some are ok, others are not, i'll look to get another few examples, but my guess is that something is up with the interpretation of the chapter markers as it seems that the video/audio pauses and moves back a few frames before continuing as normal.

Edit, the trace below shows that Im running Linux but I've recently switched from XP 32bit and had the same problem (and now face reripping some of 200+ dvds...)

comparing the chapter info from the dvd using chaplin but that just confuses me more as the chapter markers dont match up and its not even as simple as time offsets.

I am sure more experienced people will add their thoughts, but you don't specify your PC hardware/software config.
In my limited experience, stuttering is either a bandwidth issue or a processor/software limitation/bottleneck.
My normal system is an HDI Dune linked to NAS boxes, and I originally saw stuttering originally due to problems on ethernet connectivity and the Dune firmware.
I also periodically check out the mkv movies on my PC (Win 7 64bit 3 GB RAM), before transferring to the NAS and have never seen issues.

Certainly if I can transfer mkv's from one end of the house to the other end by ethernet, you should not be getting issues on a suitably configured PC.

I think we need more config information.

Running on a Xeon quad (W3580) on 12gb mem running ubuntu 64bit (11.04)

Just to be specific, this is not actually around playback or streaming, this is actually to do with the ripping process itself.

I am able to play the feature back perfectly well on the DVD (Bad Company in this example) but when I rip this using makemkv to local disk then the stutter happens.

With which player? Have you tried other players?

Using vlc and ubuntu shipped movie player i can observe the stutter, always in the same spot.

I also use a WDTV and this exhibits exactly the same behaviour.

I have just noticed that vlc actually has a problem playing back the DVD on that specific point in the movie where the ubuntu movie player works perfectly with no noticable pause.

I have rechecked the information in the chapters, and I'm not convinced that it is a chapter problem per-se but it appears to be some kind of timing issue for sure.

According to lsdvd, chapter 4 should start at 00:35:49, where the makemkv output suggests that chapter 6 should start at 00:35:54 (which is where the stutter happens near as I can make it).

I think there may be a different bug on the calculation on the number of chapters in the movie also.

I have several hundred dvd's lined up to rip so I can put them away and let them gather dust but this is driving me bananas.

I'd really love to help and since Im using a linux workstation, if you have code suggestions or debugging line items to insert then please let me know

Chapters on DVD are position-based (as in "start of cell #5"), they point to specific offset in VOB; so all timings displayed by lsdvd are values taken from IFO files which are sort of informational and may or may not be accurate. Since chapters in MKV file are time-based, MakeMKV calculates an exact time of the frame located at specific position in VOB file. It's not uncommon for timings to be a bit off.

For the shutter, it's very likely an issue with layer break when two parts of the movie are encoded with different settings. My only guess is that's a specific combination of container/player that shows the issue or not. Your only practical choice for this disc is to reencode it with handbrake.

Thanks for the reply, I can appreciate that it is difficult to diagnose without the actual raw data.

It also happens that it stutters at every chapter marker, not just the example I had picked out, is that consistent with layer switches? Is it likely that the dvd would be mastered to switch between layers at each chapter?

It appears to me that both the audio and video pause and whether its my eyes or not, it appears that the video takes a slight step back.

Is there an option where it could detect when the audio timing is inconsistent with a view to closing the gap?

My problem is that this is happening to so many of the movies I have already converted to mkv with your program and then compressed with handbrake.

Offer still stands if you want me to try out any additional diagnostics/debugging on linux.

This is very unlikely. To valideate one would need to look at ISO file.

Are you saying that you see the same problem after recompression with handbrake?

There is one simple test - please demux an MKV file with mkvextract or tsmuxer and then make an MKV file out of demuxed streams with mmg. Will you see any shutter in this case?

Mike, have to say, you are a bit of a genius!

Yes, I was experiencing this from the MakeMKV and handbrake files, both exhibited the same behaviour.

I took the MKV generated from MakeMKV, demuxed with mkvextract and then merged again with mmg.

The only output I got from mmg was:

Warning: Found one or more B frames without second reference in the first GOP. You may want to fix the MPEG2 video stream or use smart reencode before attempting to multiplex it.

I selected just the video and audio track and smooth as anything, no stutter.

Interestingly, the comparison of the original vs demux/remux output is different
