Ejecting after read errors takes over a minute and fails

I have a blu-ray that has some kind of read error in a bunch of sectors. After trying and failing to rip, if I try to eject the disk, MakeMKV takes over a minute to unmount it, but then gives up.

I find that occasionally after a drive encounters a bunch of read errors, the firmware seems to end up in a bad state and the drive needs to be power cycled to behave properly again.

I've had this for years. I have not had to power off to recover for a long time, but optical drives on Linux do seem to get wedged into error states where it will not give up the disc even when no one wants it loaded. Hitting the physical eject button repeatedly seems to help. Eventually.

I've also been using Asus drives for years. Maybe a factor?

Usually I clean the disc and try again with success. Sometimes I just reload it and all is well. Somehow the drive or Linux is temporarily confused but goes sane again.
