Nvidia Shield Pro, UHD rip playback not always correct

Hello, just recently (past month or so) I finally got a Libredrive firmware loaded onto my BR drive and have started ripping stuff in UHD. I am encountering a weird issue where some of my rips (and not just my rips, some rips I downloaded) do not play back with the correct color/brightness ratios. I am playing these back using Channels DVR software on my 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro. I also tested in Kodi on that same machine and the results were identical. The TV (Sony 950G) does switch into HDR mode on both the "bad" and "good" rips so they are being correctly detected as HDR, whether or not they look correct when played back. I am not sure if the issue is in my Shield TV Pro, the TV, or the rips.

Of movies I tested, the following look great:
Harry Potter (all)
LOTR (all)
2001
Toy Story 1, 2, 3

These other movies I tested look very "washed out". A grey haze appearing over the frame as though my TV is not calibrated correctly:

I can spot no significant difference in the MediaInfo between a workign and non- working rip. Here are two examples:

One other weird thing to throw in here, as I undersatnd it MakeMKV should support DolbyVision is it's rips now, however Pulp Fiction (which does say Dolby Vision on the disk) does not say Dolby Vision in the MediaInfo:

Are you saying that running the file through Handbrake may have intoduced the problem? I hadn't considered that. I'll try playing the MakeMKV rip (no Handbrake) and see if I get a different result

Re-ripped Wretch-It Ralph this morning. Tried playing the rip both on Channels DVR and Kodi.

Channels DVR- RIp does not play beyond the first second or two, screen becomes garbled. (I assume this is a Channels DVR issue)

Kodi- Rip plays, but has the same washed out colors that the version I ran through Handbrake had.

Is that still true? I was under the impression that recent versions of Handbrake did handle HDR10 properly, although it does not handle HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.

Maybe I should ask this question, does anyone successfully use an Nvidia Shield to play back HDR MakeMkv rips (without washed out colors)? If so what app do you use?

Whatever this issue is, it isn't a Handbrake thing, the same issue happened with the full sized rip

I use a Nvidia Shield Pro to play back all of my bluray and 4k bluray rips. If you are wanting dolby vision, you have to make sure you have the 2019 or 2020 revision for that file. I use jellyfin and plex to play media from my local computer, and everything works good that way. The only thing to know about the shield is that dolby vision will play, but as a minimum enhancement layer: that means the tv will switch into the dolby vision mode, and have some dynamic metadata, but may not have as drastic a change from the HDR10 version compared to forcing both on a local high-end bluray player. There is still a difference, but it is not as pronounced. Hopefully they launch a shield tv with an updated processor that supports more codecs and better dolby soon, but I am not holding my breath. To make sure your rips show the proper colors and everything, you cannot use handbrake to transcode/remux your rips. You will not have the same quality. I toss the makemkv produced files straight onto my server, and both plex and jellyfin have no problem playing them to my local or remote devices. So I hope this helps. Would say the color things you have talked about are because while handbrake does support 10 bit color, it may still not fully support hdr10/dolby vision disks due to the way bluray disks encode their HDR streams. It may just assume the 10 bit color is in a SDR format, and that is why it is washed out.

I use a 2019 Shield TV Pro and it works with my DV and HDR10 rips just fine. I do have to massage the DV titles by dumping the enhancement layer, but they do engage the DV mode on my TV. I am using Plex.

There is still a difference, but it is not as pronounced. Hopefully they launch a shield tv with an updated processor that supports more codecs and better dolby soon, but I am not holding my breath. To make sure your rips show the proper colors and everything, you cannot use handbrake to transcode/remux your rips. You will not have the same quality. I toss the makemkv produced files straight onto my server, and both plex and jellyfin have no problem playing them to my local or remote devices. So I hope this helps. Would say the color things you have talked about are because while handbrake does support 10 bit color, it may still not fully support hdr10/dolby vision disks due to the way bluray disks encode their HDR streams. It may just assume the 10 bit color is in a SDR format, and that is why it is washed out.

So can you explain how this works in general:

1- How to set up plex on the NAS
Any special settings i need to turn on or off so DV will work
Can i select only 1 map i want (only the 4K Map i have on the NAS) ?

2- What type of Rip i need from MakeMKV
Normal Rip (In expert mode) -> Just the Movie + audio & Subs i like (Mkv-File)
Or the full Backup Rip?
I would prefer The simple Mkv-file, but not sure if that 1 layer DV will work well vs the 2 layer DV from the disk?

3- Setup Plex on Shield Pro 2019-2020
This i can find myself so no need there unless you have an important remark there.

Is the DV really that small a difference on the Shield true Plex?
And do you know of any ways that a USB local file on the Shield (or any other divice) will give DV?

Still looking for what upgrade i want over my older Nvidia Shield 2015 or 2017.
Seems the Zidoo Z9X PRO (July 2023) still can't do those DV-decodings (FEL stuff)

I also have some rips (which does say Dolby Vision on the disk) that does not say Dolby Vision in the MediaInfo

Like will it sometimes have DV without saying Dolby vision v....?

I will still say: SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible or so?
