Hello.

Running MakeMKV v1.17.3 win(x64-release). No longer opening blu-rays. I get the "No disc inserted" error. Tried several different disc, a few of which I've successfully ripped in the past. Currently working just fine for standard def DVD (just completed a test rip - no errors, rip plays fine). This has only started in the last week.

Any suggestions?

Does your os see the blurays.
Sounds like your blu-ray laser died it sadly very common on the LG/Asus desktop drives

That could be it. I have an LG WH14NS40 that I got when I built the machine 5 years ago. I'll check it out. I had no idea the laser for the blu ray was separate from the DVD standard laser.

Looks like I have a dead laser. Question: I have cannibalized from an old PC an LGWH12LS39 from 2011. Will the current version of MakeMKV work with this drive if I use it?

should but that drive wont do UHD like the WH14NS40 NS50 was capable of doing

Humor me, because I'm an old guy who's still a little new to this. The WH12 is in and working. Very slow, but completed a few blu ray rips and everything works. Do appreciate your guidance there.

Regarding UHD and flashing, I've read through the FAQs and articles. It appears this means I can buy a new drive and update the firmware to allow it to rip 4K discs. And I further believe you sell either UHD flashed drives or a software kit to do it myself. If I only plan to do standard blu rays, there's no need to flash the drive. Do I have that all correct?

Hi, I have a stubborn disc in Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 7 Disc 1 Episode 3 is failing to rip each time with read errors. I have cleaned the disc and tried again a few times, and I noticed the link of one of the errors says:

The simple workaround is to copy all files from the disc to the hard drive manually, without MakeMKV running. If you succeed in this, there is a fast and simple way to convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later. See our forum for details.

I found I was able to copy the .m2ts file in question but not sure what all else I needed for the "See our forum for details" part.

I am wondering about this too; the mysterious instructions on how to create a "encrypted MakeMKV backup" from the files copied don’t seem to exist.

OK, So I am stumped. I have a Blu Ray, Black Adam, that Makemkv sees its name, start to open the disk, just freezes for a few seconds, and then fatal errors. Nothing in the debug log, no read errors, no clicking or grinding, 2 different drives, both are ripping other disks fine as i type this.

How long are you waiting for it to "do something"? Have you checked the tmp directory to see if it's creating a file there at all?

This is definitely WRONG!

I have three blu-rays here that cannot be ripped with makemkv:
- castaway
- Blues Brothers
- Mamma Mia

However, they can be played and viewed in the same reader WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS
- Leawo Blu-ray Player - Windows 10
- VideoByte BD-DVD Ripper (Preview Mode) - Windows 10

They can even be ripped with these programs.
(Evaluation programs of these only rips 5 minutes)

So the weaknesses of makmkv must come from somewhere.
Don't get me wrong: I think makemkv is fantastic and am very grateful
to the programmer for the great job!

But the assertion that it is ALWAYS the device could tempt some makemkv
users to buy a new device/burner, although problems can obviously also result
from weaknesses in makemkv.

I'm curious about any answers

Not wrong at all. My BluRay copy of the Blues Brothers ripped with no issue at all. Using an older version of the software (which has only gotten more capable over time). The difference between your setup and mine is the BluRay drive we are each using.

People keep insisting this is somehow meaningful. Players, by design, ignore read problems when possible, although viewers MAY notice random glitches/artifacts. IMO the optical disc industry couldn't exist w/out this "feature".

MakeMKV attempts to make a bit-perfect copy, retrying on read errors (up to set limit) & fails out if it is unsuccessful. Some other rippers may be more "forgiving".

When encountering read errors, conventional wisdom is to "clean he disc", whether it looks clean to the eye, or not. Ability to read past haze/fingerprints/scratches is inversely proportional to how much data is stored on a disc.

They even rip these blu-rays succesfully!

So it is true, that other ripper software can do the job with these three blu-rays,
makemkv fails on.

Off course I do not know, if they have problems with other blu-rays

pioneer for sure but you need to buy a flashed one for now as new ones dont work
they are slower but way more consistently reliable
