1.6.10 playback / seek issues

Post by crowfax »

Version: 1.6.10
O/S: Win 7 (64bit)

I just ripped a blu-ray with 1.6.10 and I was unable to seek successfully in the file. I tried with both WMP (tweaked with Haali, CoreAVC and AC3 Filter) and with MPC-HC (tweaked with CoreAVC). When attempting to seek with either playback stopped immediately.

The problem was not resolved by remuxing the file with MKVmergeGUI - does this mean the streams are somehow damaged with 1.6.10?

The problem was resolved by rolling back to 1.6.8.

I have not tried with the Linux version (same laptop dual booting). As this appears to be related to the new multiplexing engine I assume it would be the same.

Let me know if you need any logs / tests / etc...

I have reported the exact same symptoms here:

http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3627

Glad to see I'm not the only one, that's for sure.

Mike is aware of it and is working on a solution.

I have reverted back to 1.6.8 for the time being as well. All rips with 1.6.9 seemed to be ok when remuxed with mkvmerge. All rips with 1.6.10 needed to be completely re-ripped.

I'm sticking with 1.6.8 until a solution comes out :)

Massive bummer. I hate having to roll back. Still, I'm sure Mike will fix it soon, he's a champion!

Guys, we can't reproduce any of these problems. Please be very specific about MakeMKV / MKV configuration. Specifically:

1. What happens if you create a video-only MKV file with no audio or subs. Will it seek or crash? Even if remuxed with mmg?

2. Please confirm that you see the issue only with truehd and dts-hd track. By all means please double check if the offending track is DTS or DTS-HD. If you encounter the problem with plain DTS track, then please check that MKV has no HD tracks.

3. Please confirm that the tracks are not damaged in any configuration - if you demux any track from MKV created by 1.6.8 and 1.6.10 with tsmuxer or mkvextract, then the extracted files would be identical.

4. Please confirm that if you install 1.6.8 from http://www.makemkv.com/download/old into one folder, then install 1.6.10 into another folder, and then overwrite libmakemkv.dll/libmakemkv64.dll in 1.6.10 with corresponding library from 1.6.8, then produced MKV files would have no issues. ( This will be your workaround for the time being)

Now you're making my doubt myself! I'm gonna scrub the MakeMKV folders and reg entries on Windows and try again.

I'll try again this afternoon and test for you.

The file I created prior to making this post had 1 video stream, 3 audio tracks (2 Chinese and 1 English (core only)) and 1 subtitle stream (English).

Will test now using Windows.

Testing so far:

Removed MakeMKV, removed folders, removed registry entries. Installed MakeMKV 1.6.10

MKV with 1 video, 1 audio (DTS core) and 9 subtitle streams - Everything fine.

MKV with 1 video, 2 audio streams (DTS core) and 1 subtitle stream - Not working. mediainfo output below:

So, this is an issue with audio streams, right? Testing your DLL replacement suggestion now...

When replacing the 2 DLL files with the DLL's from 1.6.8, the problem is gone.

I have remuxed both files with MKVmergeGUI. They are different sizes after the remux:

Code: Select all

06/02/2011 03:43 PM 6,938,070,652 title00_no_workaround_remuxed.mkv
06/02/2011 03:38 PM 6,940,156,285 title00_workaround_remuxed.mkv
I'm currently extracting the streams, I will post their file sizes when done.

File sizes are the same.

From the file made by with the DLL's from 1.6.8:

Code: Select all

06/02/2011 03:58 PM 6,198,374,508 title00_workaround_Track1.h264
06/02/2011 03:58 PM 483,554,020 title00_workaround_Track2.dts

06/02/2011 03:58 PM 21,787,983 title00_workaround_Track4_PGS.sup
From the file made by with the DLL's from 1.6.10:

Code: Select all

06/02/2011 04:08 PM 6,198,374,508 title00_no_workaround_Track1.h264
06/02/2011 04:08 PM 483,554,020 title00_no_workaround_Track2.dts

06/02/2011 04:08 PM 21,787,983 title00_no_workaround_Track4_PGS.sup
File by File comparison:

Code: Select all

06/02/2011 04:08 PM 21,787,983 title00_no_workaround_Track4_PGS.sup
I'm confused. If you extract the streams the file sizes are the same. Yet if you remux the files, you get 2 different sizes? How can this be? Something in the headers? More importantly, why is this happening?

1.6.10 seems to be working fine for me now. I don't know why other than to say it must have been a corrupt installation or bad codec package, because I re-imaged my OS drive last night and gave it a fresh install of 1.6.10 and now it seems to be working fine for my purposes.

I apologize for wasting any of your time. Crowfax, you may want to check your installation, as it seemed to have alleviated my problems. Just ripped down all three discs of Deadwood Season 1 Blu-ray with 1.6.10 and every MKV plays great in WMC.

It's not my install. I've done it from fresh, along with some rather long testing (see posts above).

Make an MKV file with 2 DTS tracks and test it. That seems to be the issue.

Extra testing...

The file made by 1.6.10 make TotalMedia Theatre 5 crash when trying to open (I know TMT5 has poor MKV support, but it's the only other media player I have).

The file made by 1.6.10 with the DLL's from 1.6.8 worked fine with TMT5.

The problem was resolved by rolling back to 1.6.8.
Experienced much the same problem myself, but only on my home theatre pc, where I had to configure mpc-hc to use quicker external filters, rather than the default internal ones. The same files play just fine using the default internal filters on my much more powerful desktop pc.

That said, even with exactly the same settings (lossless hd track only, only forced subtitles), 1.6.10's file sizes are always a couple kb's shorter than with 1.6.08.

I've now switched to using Potplayer instead, a player which, as far as I'm concerned, kicks much arse. No problems seeking with that one. I did also try VLC, and aside from the audio sometimes taking a minute or two to kick in, it seeks just fine. VLC has long since been retired as my player of choice however.

I don't think this is a limitation of the media players. Please see my research above, something is clearly happening with the new multiplexing engine that wasn't happening before and is causing it to create files which don't play back correctly.

Concur completely. I had never put my copy of Old Country for Old Men(BD) on my wired network..so I did it this morning. No navigation possible with my Popcorn Hour A-200. On a previous comment I ''downgraded". to 1.68...PERFECT navigation.....as had all my previous 200 BDs on the network. "Something" is killing navigation with Version 1.10

I ripped about 10 BR's with 1.6.10, of which 5 happened to be Sony-made with True HD sound. Only Sony (pun intended) had the problem, all other company's discs went well... Downgraded to 1.6.8 and reripped Sony discs, now they play fine.

Well this issue cropped back up yesterday while ripping down the 14th season of South Park on blu-ray.

Doesn't matter what audio track I rip down....Dolby TrueHD, core audio, separate commentary tracks, multiple tracks....all exhibit the same symptoms as before, which means that they completely freeze windows media player when trying to seek.

Funnily enough however, not 10 minutes before I threw in South Park, I ripped down "Tombsone," which only had DTS core audio, and it was fine.

I'll try reverting back to 1.6.8 again to see if it works.
