Dumb question

Does the following mean that MakeMKV performs a micro-flash before ripping, or that I need to flash the firmware myself? My focus is just BluRay and DVDs.

You have to do it yourself makemkv does not do it for you.
You don't need to do anything if your just using regular blu-ray and DVD

Performance not unless you use the drive speed unlock in the registry for libredrive drives.
But there are a few cases where on new aacs version your drive will get locked without libredrive and you won't be able to copy any blurays until makemkv is updated but this is rare but libredrive would not let that happen

it could or it could blow up your discs seen that too would not recommend it

I assume you've read the thread about MakeMKV drive speed control.

At the end of the day, reading data faster from an optical disc requires the disc to spin faster. Spin it fast enough, and it'll break. Setting up unrestricted read speeds isn't likely to result in disc failure, but the chance is non-zero.

If you have a large number of discs to get through, a better solution is to use more than one drive at the same time. MakeMKV supports this with the 'Ask for single drive mode' checkbox in preferences. Personally, I have 3 drives and can use all 3 at the same time. This makes it relatively fast to ingest a whole season of a TV show, for example.
