Your error has nothing to do with the disc - You're saving a large MKV file to a volume that either has no space left or doesn't support files longer than 4GB. Normally MakeMKV would print a warning but in your case it didn't. Please provide details about the target volume - it's size, free space and how it's formatted. Screenshot from disc utility would be helpful.

However, now I have 71GB free. (it's HFS+, journal on, GUID formatted) I restarted the iMac, powercycled the blu-ray drive... Now I get the errors:

MakeMKV v1.6.9 darwin(x86-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /MakeMKV_log.txt
Optical drive "DVD+R-DL OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S 2AHH" opened in DASPI v1.3 mode.
Optical drive "BD-ROM PLEXTOR BDDVDR PX-B310U 1.07" opened in DASPI v1.3 mode.
DEBUG: Code 100864261 at fa)R!D4q3:f>Uk<*F-:29395678
DEBUG: Code 100864261 at fa)R!D4q3:f>Uk<*F-:121262049
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading 'BD-ROM PLEXTOR BDDVDR PX-B310U 1.07' at offset '24645400576'

which repeats over and over again.

Oh, wait, that was on a different blu-ray disc.

Now TransSiberian is ripping fine. Maybe this is just a long series of unrelated compounding problems, and ultimately a bad disc?

Oh, and just to befuddle the mess, I got the latest version of MakeMKV and the direct drive plugin thing. I'm sure I'll have a new report on the disc that just failed.... coming up

Ah ha! I now see that there is a .75cm crack on the outside edge of the disc that returned those errors, and still refuses to rip with the new NEW version of MakeMKV. Damn, Mike, you're churning out revisions fast this month! ;-)

Odd, though, I thought that blu-ray discs were like DVDs, in that they start at the center and data is added from center to outer edge. So this crack should only affect the last 2% of the data, not cause a total failure to rip.... Or does MakeMKV read the entire disc first, and refuse to rip it if any errors are found? Why then, would it act like it is ripping, get 20% of the way through, and then fail? Is there a key to error messages so I can stop bugging you about bad discs?

Does the "DEBUG: Code" mean nothing, but it's the "Scsi error" that I should recognize as a bad disc, bad player error?

Anwyay, now I get this on the outer-cracked disc:

Optical drive "BD-ROM PLEXTOR BDDVDR PX-B310U 1.07" opened in DASPI v1.3 mode.

(repeats a few times, then succeeds)

and... it starts ripping....

Thanks!

PS: if it's the case that MakeMKV is discovering that the last 2% of data on the disc cannot be reliably read, could there be a dialog box that pops up saying so, and offering the chance to rip the other 98%? This is *exactly* why I want to rip my discs in the first place! If one starts to crack, I'll want to back up as much as possible and either store the data on a new blu-ray-R or some other medium before the expensive one goes belly up.

This is exactly what it does - it tries to read the file ignoring damaged part. The problem is that if if too much is damaged then entire conversion would fail.

For backup, there is a hidden setting to ignore read errors, so you can copy everything that is still readable. The question is, what to do next with this copy, as any conversion tool will likely fail on it.

well... I got a new Transsiberian blu-ray disc and it ripped just fine. Mark this thread as RESOLVED. :-)
