Ripping UHD discs with LG WH16NS60

Hello All.

I don't know if this has been covered before but I'm trying to figure how to rip UHD movies to use with my plex server.
I upgraded to the LG WH16NS60 some time ago when the Pioneer bluray drive I was using died. I've been successful with ripping bluray, DVD and CD's. However, when I tried to do a UltraHD I got an error about firmware/Drive not Libre compatible and wasn't able to read the disc in my computer. How do I flash the firmware to be able to rip UHD? What Hardware might I have that is not sufficient?

Also my PC is about 4 years old and was mostly made for the use of just basic office apps, web browsing, mail, ripping CD's DVD and blu rays. It is AMD system running win10 with Ryzen 7 2700x CPU and 16GB of RAM. The Video card though it is an NVidia card is a fanless HTPC card and not supper powerful for things like gaming but is capable of 1080p same as the HP monitor. I will find out the exact card latter and add that info. I am not going to try to play the ripped files on the PC. I just want to stream them to an 4K tv on my wired network.

I have software like handbrake installed too.

As long as that drive was manufactured after ~Oct 2015 (detailed in Warning section) , the 1st post of the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2023 topic will tell you the recommended FW for your drive & provide links to FW/Tools/HowTo videos. Read carefully.

Once you have that sorted, UHD FAQ is a good read.

I purchased the Drive in August 2022 from/Though Amazon so I'm guessing it was made after October 2015. I will have to open the computer and look also see what MakeMKV shows for drive info.

No need to crack the case... just copy/paste the Drive Info/LibreDrive Info from the right-hand MakeMKV pane here to be sure, but odds are in your favor.

edit: IF it's a genuine LG WH16NS60, the whole NS40 vs NS50 thing is moot, but pls post the info anyway.

Just copy/paste the Drive Info/LibreDrive Info from the right-hand MakeMKV pane here to be sure, but odds are in your favor.

edit: IF it's a genuine LG WH16NS60, the whole NS40 vs NS50 thing is moot, but pls post the info anyway.

If you are running Windows 10+, this will be VERY straight forward...

- download WH16NS60 1.02MK FW... LG 5.25" desktop > HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

- download SDFtool Flasher & follow instructions in 1st post of THAT thread.

IF you are running a pre-Windows 10 version, use the "old original version of the SDFtool flasher" & manually select "encrypted firmware".

I should have windows 10 22H2 looks like this will be easy. I'll work on it this evening after dinner and post back how it works out.

That's a question for another tool. MakeMKV takes what's on the disc & puts it in a .mkv container... 1:1. Any perceived differences in quality will likely be due to how your player-of-choice handles .mkvs.

If looking to save space, convert to a different (more compatible?) format, etc., checkout something like HandBrake (or VidCoder... alternative front-end for HandBrake).

Handbrake is what I've been using. Plex seems to play H.264 and H.265 just fine. staying with handbrake, as its what I know is probably what I'll do. I just have to experiment with the quality settings.
