MKV and Roku

#1 Post by Geneo » Wed Apr 05, 2023 1:58 pm

I recently switched from the M4V to MKV format which looks much better. However, there is a noticeable delay in the loading time. The M4V was instant. Is there something I need to do to speed this up?

.mkv files are just containers. The audio and video format inside it can any number of things. .m4v is Apple's version of a .mp4 file. The exact same video in your .m4v could also be inside your .mkv file.

However, since you said the .mkv looks better, it probably means the format or bit rate is different.

The program MediaInfo can tell you a lot of details about your files, including what format of video is inside them. Take a look at both your .m4v files and your .mkv files to determine what's different. Maybe post an example of each here.

I use Handbrake to convert the files from MKV to M4V which also compresses the video file. It's not bad but not as good as the raw MKV.
