To the best of my knowledge if you file a claim on AliExpress of item not has described they will refund your money. Happened to me with some item, sent them a picture of scam item, immediately got my money back and was told to either keep or throw away the scam item.

I will need proof to send them what can I use as I cant find any information even from Pioneer about the particular drive I have. It is like it never existed!

This drive is an OEM model intended for Japanese Toshiba laptops with UHD support, of course you won't find any information about it, since it's not a retail model. I have sent Mike the dump from exact drive like yours, please be patient.

I can confirm Verbatim #43888 is LibreDrive capable external Pioneer drive. I had it on 1.14 firmware (2020-06-15) from the box matching the following entry.

Code: Select all

PIONEER-BD-RW___BDR-UD04-1.14-489CDFD6-8A10-20200615
Although it does not matter MakeMKV this drive seems to be official 4K UHD BD drive with AACS2 keys for e.g. proper SGX/PowerDVD Ultra usage (don't bother :D). There are at least two model number variations and #43888 is the official UHD BD drive.
Hi,

I bought this drive, same model, same firmware etc. however it does not load Blu-rays at all - just makes knocking noises, sometimes spins up, but always ends up just ejecting the disc after a minute. It should just work, right? Would you say it’s faulty? I’ve tried a number of UHD and Blu-ray Discs. It does, however, read the enclosed disc it came with, PDF manuals etc.

Enclosed disc is probably just a CD-ROM or maybe a DVD-ROM. So different laser is used to read those older format discs. Your drive may have a faulty blue laser, which is used for BD discs. If you already tried several different discs without success then I think dirty or faulty discs are not the reason. Maybe try to clean one misbehaving BD with a proper microfibre cloth. If that does not help, contact the retailer.

The Pioneer BDR S13J-X looks like a Japanese market drive.

I think the 1.04 firmware is the one Pioneer released to break LibreDrive support. Others have reported their drive doesn't work on 1.04.

If you have the drive, MakeMKV will tell you. After MakeMKV launches, on the right hand side there's a bunch of drive, LibreDrive, and disc information. If LibreDrive is supported, in the LibreDrive section it'll say Status: Enabled. Follow the 'doesn't work' link in my previous post to see an example screenshot (although, for that user it was not supported).

Hello. I am a novice and have not copied 4k discs before, so I don't know if my problem is user error or an unsupported drive.

I just tried and failed copying three 4k discs.

You have to allow internet connection for MakeMKV in order to download latest Hashed Keys
in order to rip UHD content from a protected disk.

You must allow Internet access for Makemkv. That's it. Go to View Preferences General and check the box.
