I have a Mac running OS12.6.3 and a Pioneer BDR 212D player. Since the Maverick Blu-ray, I have successfully ripped "Ticket to Paradise", no problems at all.
Today, I had "The Unforgiven" fail in the same way as the Maverick disc, i.e. the drive noisily "cycling" and no longer reading after the 2/3rds mark.
The solution was the same: disconnect from the internet. Both discs ripped without a hitch.
I don't know if this solution has been posted elsewhere? Or even if it's a real thing, but it can't hurt to try.
