Pioneer BDR-XS07UHD is KING for UHD 4K Blu Ray Ripping
Is it expensive? Yes!

Hi All, Jan 2023 here, and if your rediscovering your movies via 4K like the rest of these amazing users on the forum, this drive is the ultimate beast with MakeMKV if your on a Mac.
Connects via USB C or USB A, it's external, super slim, Mac OSX Compatible, no need to worry about firmware or anything it just works out of the box. Connect it, Open MakeMKV, and you know the rest.
Thanks all!

Pioneer BDR-XS07UHD
My tried and true Pioneer BDR-XS06 died yesterday and although it didn't do UHD it did everything else.
So I bit the bullet and bought the XS07 ... it arrives today.
In the past, I used Handbrake to minimize the size of the files and Emby and Infuse as players but I assume with UHD and Dolby Vision/Atmos that the MKV file needs to be used.
I was hoping I can get some advice on how to proceed with UHD/4K BluRays post rip.
UPDATE: It wasn't the Pioneer drive.....it was the new Mac Ventura 13.2. I have a Mac Mini (M1 chip) and an iMac 2020 (intel) both with Ventura 13.2 and the Pioneer drive doesn't work.
I have a Macbook pro with Ventura 13.1 and it works great. Don't update Ventura!!!!!

Hi,
I bought this slightly different drive myself after not being able to find your model on Amazon UK:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081JX8R39? ... ct_details
I have just finsished my first RIP of a 4K UHD movie using the drive and MakeMKV and I put the file on my NAS, uploaded it to Plex and played it from the native Plex app in my LG TV and the TV recognised it as HDR and the picture quality is great. No issues here so far but only 1 disc in!
Libre Mode also working immediately as well.

I just ordered one from Newegg this seems better than the one I have in an external enclosure at the moment.
Re: Pioneer BDR-XS07UHD is KING for UHD 4K Blu Ray Ripping
It is working great so far it is a bit noisier than the one in my external enclosure, but it is also smaller and doesn't need external power so I'm keeping this one on my desk.

MakeMKV doesn't care about and removes any region coding, so no need to worry about that. Pioneer drives are king!!
Cheers

I don't think MakeMKV removes anything but AACS protection.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 4:32 amMakeMKV doesn't care about and removes any region coding, so no need to worry about that. Pioneer drives are king!!

Isn't this the same as the Verbatim 43888 - also it's limited to a 4x read speed of 4k UHD discs?

yes and no if you do a folder backup the region stuff is still there but easly bypassed players like vlc let you change the region in software not on the driveEzatoka wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 10:06 amI don't think MakeMKV removes anything but AACS protection.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 4:32 amMakeMKV doesn't care about and removes any region coding, so no need to worry about that. if you make it into a mkv file then there is no protection left its just a video file at that point minus some other junk like cenevia or whatever but it does not effect any unofficial bluray players

Is there a particular firmware version that is required for this drive to work?
