Flashing BU40N V1.02 Fails

Post by wepahoward » Mon Jan 16, 2023 5:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

Need some help getting my 4k UHD drive to work with MakeMKV. My drive is an external BU40N with firmware version 1.02. I have downloaded and tried to flash using the SDFtoolFlasher.exe (and command line) but get an error: Command prodcued error code 0xff23d101 when using firmware HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin or HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin

Not sure what I am doing wrong but have tried searching online and don't seem to be able to find anything that shows me what I am doing wrong.

Any help is appreciated.

Is your drive an Archgon? If so, the 1.02 firmware on it is encrypted.

Ensure that:

1. MakeMKV is installed in the default location.
2. You are using 64 bit windows.
3. There is no disc in the drive.
4. The drive tray is closed.

SDFtool Flasher should show a green tick next to encrypted firmware if the drive is an Archgon. If for some reason it doesn't, you can toggle the encrypted flag by clicking the red X.
Cheers :D

Hi Wepahoward,

I was looking for an answer to the same question but found a solution. Maybe you are still looking for one so here is mine.

I ran the SDFtoolFlasher.exe as an administrator and I plugged my device into the USB 3.1 port. Previously I was trying to flash running the GUI normally and my player was plugged in to the USB-C port.

I therefore don't know which of the two things did the charm but one of them definitely did.

Best
