Can we stream makemkv rips to AppleTV2

#1 Post by pasjk » Tue Mar 29, 2011 1:42 pm

Is there a way to do this without converting to mv4 and putting in I Tunes?

Only if you jailbreak the ATV (use greenpois0n) and install XBMC.

Otherwise no.

Greenpois0n jailbreaks an AppleTV2, it installs Cydia which allows you to install other software on the ATV one of which is XBMC.

Just wanted to mention, that if you have an airplay enabled device (iPhone 4 or iPad), you can stream mkv from your networked Mac, to the iPhone 4 or iPad, using the AirVideo App available in iTunes, and the AirVideo server on the Mac. AirVideo server is free; you can use the free version of AirVideo for iPhone or iPad, but it limits the number of directories you can access.

With the apps installed, you launch AirVideo Server on the mac, launch the app on the iPhone/iPad, select and play the mkv file from the iPhone/iPad, and then select Airplay-AppleTV 2 and it plays on the TV that's connected to the AppleTV 2. Only downside is that it doesn't pick up the DTS-HD audio. For that, you have to go through the encoding using Handbrake, or whatever other application you use to encode the MKV file into an .m4v that can play on the AppleTV 2. No jailbreaking of the AppleTV 2 required.

See here for the Apps:
