Original Top Gun issue

Post by Mouse »

I have the UHD disc of the original Top Gun. Did a makemkv backup and then ran it again to spit out a .mkv version of the main title. This process has worked on several discs, but did not on this disc. Problem is that when I try to play it (using network connected Oppo 203) the Oppo shows "The file format is not supported".

A bit more info:
If I put the full backup made by makemkv onto my NAS and point the Oppo BD player to the index.bdmv file the Oppo will play it. Don't know if it will properly play all the way thru.
In the STREAM folder the main movie file is 00003.m2ts. VLC just hangs if I try to play that file. VLC will play other .m2ts files on the Top Gun disc, and will play the big movie .m2ts files on other backups. There is something odd about the Top Gun 00003.m2ts file that makemkv and vlc cannot handle, but apparently the Oppo can when it navigates there from the index.bdmv file.

mediainfo has trouble opening the 00003.m2ts file; takes it about 20 secs, then it reports: (image attached)

Is it supposed to just be 1 hour long?

Top Gun, 1986 version, is 1hr 50 mins.
I let the Oppo run playing it from the makemkv backup and it terminated, early I think, don't have a solid time of how long it played. Will play it again and try to get a time.

According to the screen shot of MediaInfo you posted, the file 00003.m2ts is 30.8 GiB and 1h 0m long. Which probably isn't right. Are you sure the rip/backup completed without error?

My UHD rip of Top Gun (1986) is about 50GB.

I cleaned the disc and tried running makemkv again. It reported a fatal read error on 00003.m2ts at offset 33073594368.
makemkv says that error comes from the drive and is independent of any bit stream security.
I cleaned the disc again and am trying again. I'm going to return this rental disc and purchase one from Amazon; its only $7.
Will report back in a couple of weeks on further findings.

More cleaning and trying again and makemkv made a full length .mkv with no reported errors. This one plays fine in both vlc and on my Oppo BD player.
The problem was just an unclean disc.
