Dolby Vision rips

#1 Post by mrmoo » Fri Oct 21, 2022 12:08 am

New user here, fresh on the scene.
Purchased a drive from one of the sellers here to rip my 4K DV discs - Works great, however I have a few questions on the process.

When I do the rip, I get the disc files, then when I convert to MKV i get 2x files of almost equal size that seem to be identical. Disc in question is the 2020 UK re-release of Fifth Element with DV. I figured the differences would be one is DV and one is HDR? When I stream through Plex, DV is detected and activated on my LG C2.

The questions I have are, how do I tell the difference between the two files that are created?
With other 'downloaded' exclusively DV TV shows/Movies, when I see their thumbnails in Plex or view them on a display that doesn't support DV, they show in a purple hue. I have done a test viewing of the Fifth Element MKV I made that triggers DV on my C2, however it will also show normally with no purple hue on a standard HDR display. Is this because it has BOTH DV and HDR support within the file? Or is DV being triggered but is actually only HDR and it's a false trigger?

Apologies if these are questions that have been previously asked or really basic, I'm looking to expand my knowledge and appreciate any help.

Use the program "Mediainfo". It's free. Just google it.

Also when ripping a lot of times one has no chapters. So when they both are identical, length wise check if one has no chapters. Next time just choose the one that has chapters.

@kweenie - That explains a lot. I've done a few more rips and you are right, one has chapters one doesn't. Thanks for clearing that up!

@Coopervid - I installed Mediainfo and it's super handy, thank you! I do still have my initial question which is even more burning now that I have seen what Mediainfo tells me. When I play these rips of 4K DV discs through Plex, Dolby Vision is triggered on the TV - However the same file will play in HDR on another TV that doesn't support DV - DV files I have downloaded in the past have always had a purple hue to them if played on a device that doesn't support it.
When the rip is made into MKV, is it retaining both DV and HDR10 in the one file and will act as the disc does and play the format that the display is capable of? If so, that's really awesome and I have no issues.

Here is an extract of the Fifth Element rip I mentioned:
