West Wing Problems

#1 Post by benjamintm » Sun Apr 10, 2011 10:32 am

I'm trying to rip my West Wing DVDs and on the first two discs (the only ones I've tried so far), the rip fails on the fourth title with the following error:
DEBUG: Code 0 at ceyrrx<j!.wf:Gs<m#r:121263452
DEBUG: Code 0 at ceyrrx<j!.wf:Gs<m#r:213131019
DEBUG: Code 0 at /(<G>=l>l9&ZO8bCb*p_:29394183
DEBUG: Code 531385 at /(<G>=l>l9&ZO8bCb*p_:29393309
LIBMKV_TRACE: Exception: Error while reading input

The discs are clean. Attached is the log file generated. Any suggestions?

Believe it or not, it's a bug in MakeMKV. It will be corrected certainly in a next version. There is no workaround for now.

Heh. I was certain it was going to be a DVD authoring/mastering error and MakeMKV would have to work around another dodgy disc.

Hey, resurrecting this more than a decade later, since my father-in-law is just running into this right now. Can we confirm this was fixed, and in what version?

Thanks!

Since there have been several dozen major releases of MakeMKV in the last 11 years and no more messages about West Wing, either it has been fixed or no one ever thought about ripping the series again.

I'm thinking maybe both?

It should've been. Please send the log file from 1.16.7 . Thanks!

The fix seems to work for season one, but I am still getting errors starting in the middle of season 2. Here is the log from disk 17 where it detects a few scenes but not the main episodes. I confirmed the disk plays fine in VLC.

Not posting the log makes it very hard to determine what the errors might be.

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB' at offset '650987520'
That error usually means the optical drive could not correctly read the optical disc. The standard advice is to gently clean the disc and try again.

I’m now having some problems with (at least one) of my West Wing DVDs. This is S5 Disc 2 from the complete season set, not the complete series set. I tried ripping it to VIDEO_TS with MDRP. It stalled out. I tried playing Title 1 (the “all episodes” title) in VLC. It crashed the app. I cleaned the disc, restarted my computer, and tried MDRP again. No dice. Then I tried MakeMKV. It ripped two episodes (Titles 2 and 3, aka the two episodes that I never watch as opposed Titles 4 and 5, aka the two episodes I watch a LOT). The log from that session is below and I included a screenshot of the Title menu to show the durations, in case that’s useful.

Speaking of cleaning discs... I’ve ripped or converted probably 100 DVDs in the last week: Almost all of The West Wing (to VIDEO_TS with MDRP) plus a huge number of homemade DVDs (using MakeMKV first and MDRP if that failed). Every time a disc fails, I clean it and try again. At no point has that ever worked. Is cleaning a myth? Or am I doing it wrong? (Given my history of whacky tech problems, it could also just be me.)

Here’s my method:
1) Lay disc on eyeglass cleaning cloth, playable side up
2) Spray eyeglass cleaner (the legit stuff from the optician) lightly onto disc surface
3) Use 2nd eyeglass cleaning cloth to wipe across the disc in straight lines
4) Examine disc to see if there are any spots, blemishes, streaks, etc.
5) In the event of anything that appears to be a scratch, put a couple of drops of cleaning fluid on it, then use a folded corner of the cleaning cloth to try to remove / erase it VERY gently using straight lines. If it comes off, it wasn’t a scratch.

I've had to clean discs before in order to get a good rip. I use plenty of warm water, dish soap, and the tip of my finger. I lightly go back and forth in a straight line from the middle to the edge and back. The dish soap is good at removing oils from fingerprints and any films or deposits left over from manufacturing or off gassing from the disc sitting in the case for a while. Use plenty of warm water to rinse. I use a can of air to blast water off the data side of the disc while the label side is laying on a paper towel to dry.

It doesn't always work of course. And sometimes old discs start to rot. I've also been amazed at how often one drive will struggle with a disc that a different drive reads without trouble. This is why I have four different drives on my desk. :)
