LG WH16NS60 VS LG WH16NS40
My LG WH16NS60 is dead. It won't read regular blu-rays or UHD's anymore. Therefore, I'm looking for a new full-size desktop drive.
Are the top (2) the LG WH16NS60 and the LG WH16NS40?
If so, which one is best or more reliable?
Thank you,

Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2022
As always, the guide lists all the drives that work.
Of the two LG drives you mentioned, they're the same at the hardware level. The LG BU40N is well liked, but I don't have any personal experience with it. Also, a bunch of Pioneer drives are supported now. My Pioneer BDR-212U has been working well.

Before, I get another drive, is there a way to tell if a windows update is the reason my drive stopped working?
I'm only interested in full size internal drives. I will only be using makemkv to rip 4ks. I also rip cds with iTunes.
With that being said, what drives do you recommend and can I buy one from you pre-flashed?

Buy a LGBH16NS55 which seems to be the cheapest globally and flash it to WH16NS60 1.03 MK. Or buy it in that configuration if you hesitate to flash it yourself from one of the sellers here.

Re: LG WH16NS60 VS LG WH16NS40
I went through all the full-size internal drives and decided to get another LG WH16NS60 or a Pioneer BDR-212UBK.
To clarify, for the WH16NS60 firmware 1.02MK is recommended, correct?
For the BDR-212UBK it will work out of the box and does not need to be flashed, correct?
Again, I am only using makeMKV for ripping 4k discs.
If I decide on a WH16NS60, who do I contact to purchase one?
Thank you,

Or get a BU40N and give up on the desktop drive part they sell adapters to put in in a 5.25 bay and the lasers are way easier to clean then any desktop drive

Re: LG WH16NS60 VS LG WH16NS40
I just ordered a Pioneer BDR-212UBK.
This drive will work for ripping 4ks using makeMKV without having to do any flashing. I then can watch the mkv's in VLC without any issues. Is this correct?
I never had to replace an optical drive before on my PC. Aside from physically swapping them out, do I need to uninstall my LG WH16NS60 somehow in Windows before physically installing the Pioneer BDR-212UBK?
After I physically install the Pioneer BDR-212UBK, do I need to manually install drivers, or will Windows 10 automatically install them?
I'm aware they sell adaptors for the slim internal drives, but I'm 100% set on the full-size internal drives. I hope that doesn't offend anyone, it's just my preference.
Thank you,

Yea it's a great drive. I have one in a vantec case that I use for ripping UHD's. It's like a tank. I've never had it fail on me. No drivers. Just install the drive and off you go. LibreDrive will activate on it no problem and you'll be off ripping UHD's in no time. Well, ok, it will take some time. The Pio's are tanks but they aren't the fastest drives. That's part of their charm. LOL

Okay, thanks for the info. I will take function and reliability over speed and day.
Re: LG WH16NS60 VS LG WH16NS40
Most of us came to the same conclusion. It hardly does you any good to have a UHD reader capable of insane speeds when you end up having to re-rip the disc 10 times to get a clean read of it. LOL The Pio is about the best reader I've seen. The bu40n has also never let me down and is slightly faster than the Pio. But that's not a desktop drive which I know you're looking for. I'm fairly sure you'll be happy with the Pio.
