Been working on and off with Mike and his team via support@makemkv.com and svq@makemkv.com trying to solve a similar problem with The King's Man (2021) UHD disc that keeps failing. I've checked the 00673.m2ts and it appears to be playing okay via VLC, but every time I try to rip it with v1.17.0 or v1.17.1 I am getting the below errors.

I own the disc so if anyone has additional suggestions I am more than happy to try them. Additionally I have ripped 5-6 UHDs successfully since this log file so I know the drive is good and in working condition!

Thanks all!

Probably the disc is dirty, try gently cleaning it. If the optical drive is USB powered, make sure both USB plugs are plugged into high powered USB ports.

There are lots of messages like that in your log. Have you tried gently cleaning the disc?

@dcoke22 I've tried a handful of different cleaning methods, but for sure open to suggestions:
- Warm water with a light dish soap and blowing it dry with canned air
- Lens cleaner with Microfiber
- Microfiber only

Just tried another attempt cleaning the UHD with water and dish soap, dried with canned air and got the below log file. Looks like it hung at a different offset, but still didn't complete....

Thoughts?

Whenever I clean a disc I also use the dish soap and canned air method.

Code: Select all

004004:0000 The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00673.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 29956853760, attempting to work around
It did start to have trouble at a different offset, but one that's nearly the same as before. Do you have a different optical drive you can try? (perhaps on a friend's computer?) I have 3 different optical drives and it has been my experience that when a disc won't work in my main drive, it often (but not always) works in one of my other drives. In fact, I try a different drive before I bother to clean the disc. It seems some discs and drives just don't get along.

@dcoke22 Great idea. I had a secondary UHD LG drive, but it died a year ago now, so probably time to pick up another. Thinking the ASUS BW-16D1HT is my next move!

Thanks for all the help and I'll post an update after I know more.

@Billycar11 THANK YOU for the advice. I unfortunately already ordered the ASUS BW-16D1HT and enclosure, but hey we surely can't have enough of these gems laying around right. So I went ahead and picked up the LG BU40N and enclosure....

Fingers crossed on all!

Gents, wanted to update you... Got a BU40N drive over the weekend, flashed in, installed in an enclosure fired it up with The freshly cleaned King's Man (2021) UHD disc and it STILL failed..... URGH!! Gotta love a good trial and error, but the good news is that I completely ruled out the drives, firmware and MakeMKV as it very much seems to be the mastering of the UHD itself. So ordered a Target version and will let you know how the saga plays out.

Thanks again!

Just got the Target package The King's Man UHD in today, cleaned it, started the rip and it completed!!! So the saga has come to an end and we can confirm the issue being had were 100% Mastering / disc related.

Thanks all for your help and on to the next one!
