Hello,
I use makeMKV to rip my 4K Blu-ray's and I play the mkv files with VLC Media Player. I'm looking to get a new 75" display for my PC. As stated before, I watch 4K Blu-ray files with VLC, I use Photoshop for precise editing, I play games on Steam, (not FPS games) and I do all the normal stuff you do on a PC.
Is a 60Hz display good for watching my mkv files in VLC, would a 120Hz display even be an improvement over 60Hz for this?
I really want the commercial grade, 75" NEC V754Q display, but it only has a 60Hz refresh rate. I currently have a commercial grade, 46" NEC display that has a 60Hz refresh rate. This is a 2k display and everything looks fine to me. I am mostly getting a new display for the 75" size and 4k resolution.
I very much prefer the design of a commercial grade displays, they look like a PC monitor instead of a TV.
I was considering the Samsung QN95B and Samsung QN90B.
Thank you,
60Hz display for mkv files?

Re: 60Hz display for mkv files?
120hz would be better but your 60 hz display may have 24/23 hz modes just swap to the correct one for the movie your watching
Most movies are 23.97 and that's the 23 hz mode on TV's usually.
Some movies like Gemini man are 59.94 hz so you use that mode programs like jriver or madvr can swap modes automatically and even put the display in hdr mode VLC really needs to add that
If your not watching the movie at a matched framerate or an multiple there of your going to have additional judder.

Re: 60Hz display for mkv files?
Okay, thanks for the help.
Are you saying that if I get a 60hz display to make sure I can change the refresh rate to 23/24hz when needed? Since you mentioned a multiple of, I assume 46/47/48hz would be ideal also. When watching the select few titles with 59hz, I would just set the display back to the native 60hz.
Any chance a 60hz display can adjust to the optimal framerate automatically, based on the current signal it receives?
I assume with a 120hz display, I would never have to worry about changing the refresh rate. Since 120hz is a multiple of every movie.
Bottom line, would you go with the NEC V754Q or Samsung QN9_B? Also, the Samsung "class the frame" looks pretty cool. As it shares the uniform, frame look you get with a commercial display.

why you would still get stutter at 60 every now and then just change to the 59.94leosantare wrote: ↑Sun Jul 10, 2022 2:06 amOkay, thanks for the help.

no display will auto swap to match the framerate. some 60hz displays cant even display 24hz properly it will always have 3:2 pull down so 120hz would be better and a real 120hz not fake motion flow or backlight strobing.
a 120hz display will just double the frame 5 times so yeah just about dont need to change it.
i wouldn't choose either i would choose the S95B https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/s95b-oled or the sony XR-65A95K and maybe the LG C2 https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c2-oled
to swap refresh rates use jriver media center and enable the settings or use madvr but i couldn't get rid of stutter with madvr even with it setup right
i wouldn't choose a tv based on the frame i choose it for how it performs and oleds are just about the best at everything except brightness and now with the qd oleds they are getting brighter and really my c9 is already bright enough.

Re: 60Hz display for mkv files?
The NEC V754Q which is 60hz, actually supports 24hz also. Therefore, I just go to the nvidia control panel and change it when I want to watch a mkv? That is, assuming the mkv is a 24hz movie.
I could really use your help since I just purchased the NEC V754Q and may have made a mistake because of the HDR.
https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/v754q
I was told this display supports HDR by NEC multiple times. Although, it looks like it's HLG and PQ. Is this a good thing and will Windows show that the NEC V754Q is HDR compatible in the screen shot below? Right now, I'm using an older SDR, NEC display so the screenshot shows it's not compatible in the three options. The 3 options I'm referring to are stream HDR video, use HDR and use WCG apps.
This is what the manual says for the V754Q, under the gamma options.
When I rip a 4K UHD, the mkv will have HDR10, even if the disc had HDR10+ or DV, correct? Will the NEC V754Q be able to play the HDR10?
Thank you,

I forgot to mention,
Thanks for your suggestions, but I'm 100% set on a 75" display. I was looking at the NEC V754Q, (commercial grade) and the Samsung QN95B/QN90B, (consumer grade) displays.

Re: 60Hz display for mkv files?
what video card do you have?
the reason hdr might not be showing up is sometime you need to enable advanced picture mode or something like that different from manufacturer to manufacturer
for lg its ultra deep color sony its enhanced hdmi mode ect...
yes the rips can fall back to standard hdr 10 if your display does not support the other modes
also just saying if you look at pg 20 of the user manual there is no 4k 3840x2160 24HZ/23hz mode it only has 24hz for 4096x 2160
most movies are 23.97 so for most tvs thats the 23hz mode.
and again just because it has a 24hz mode does not mean its judder free and for displays like this its hard to tell if its not reviewed by a place like rtings if you look at the review i sent you will see the judder has a perfect 10 score for 24hz
this is what the lg c9 oled looks like in that menu

Re: 60Hz display for mkv files?
I currently have a rtx2080fe, but plan to upgrade.
To make things more simple, do you know if the nec can have all 3 display capabilities in the windows HD color settings? Do you think the nec will display hdr well when playing mkvs?
I assume the Samsung will do all this fine, but if the nec can also, I would rather get the nec.
I would get an oled, but like I said, I'm totally set on a 75" display to fit my room the best.
I just ordered the nec, I do not have it right now. I may be able to cancel the order and go for the Samsung. This is a pretty big deal for me. This will be my display for the next 10+ years.
Thank you,

Okay, thank you.
Yes, I'm aware the oleds come in 77" Although, that is too large for my room and would not look right.
