Jack Goes Boating blu-ray problems

Post by theOtherDave » Thu Mar 24, 2011 2:01 pm

I have had repeated problems trying to encode Jack Goes Boating (2010) ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278379/ ).

The encode always gets to a bit more than 6 GB output file length, then stops adding to the file, even though the blu-ray drive keeps doing something until I manually quit MakeMKV. The disc looks fine, but I cleaned it just in case. That didn't help.

Log is attached, thanks for any help.
------
MakeMKV_log-JGB-6.txt
p.s. I'm not sure if the first log got uploaded correctly, so I'm attaching it again, along with the log for an attempted disc backup.

----->
follow-up - I tried encoding a second blu-ray of the same movie and got similar results. I've attached two new log files for the second disc.

I successfully encoded the blu-ray of a different movie that I had previously encoded, so at this point I'm wondering if there's something peculiar about this particular blu-ray.

In case it's helpful - my machine: iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS 10.6.7

------>
oops - I didn't realize there was limit of 3 attachments - here's the meaty part of one of the log files for the second disc attempted encoding:

I am pleased (if a bit confused) to report that my third attempt, using the second blu-ray, succeeded.

This indicates a physically damaged disc.

Does it seem odd that I was able to encode the second disc at all (albeit on the 3rd attempt) ?

If there was a subtle physical flaw with both of the discs (a bad "pressing"?) , then it sounds like my blu-ray drive's error correction succeeded during the third encode attempt, but failed for the first two attempts. And failed six times for the first disc.

At this point, I'm suspecting a subtle problem with my blu-ray drive. And I should just replace the thing. But I'm still puzzled that the drive seems to be fine when I try encoding other blu-ray discs (or DVDs).

speculative feature request: If this is a real issue, and not just an isolated case of a funky drive :
If MakeMKV had an option to "ask" the drive to read more slowly - would that increase the chance of a successful read?

I'm attaching one of the logs of an unsuccessful attempt at the second disc, which has the scsi medium error messages. Thanks again.

I just tried watching the 2nd copy on my blu-ray player and indeed it is troubled.

The first time I loaded it, I couldn't even get it to start - the introduction screen with background music and setup options began properly, but wouldn't start the film when I hit the "play movie" icon. I restarted my blu-ray player and managed to start playback, but then several minutes into the film, playback just stopped.

This disc, and the previous copy both looked fine - shiny & new - no dirt or scratches. So if there is physical damage, it's not naked-eye visible. Having similar problems with two discs of the same film makes me wonder if the disc might incorporate some new blu-ray "feature" that confuses both my blu-ray player and BD drive. Or is this just a bad batch of blu-ray discs?

However, thanks to my one successful MakeMKV encode, I no longer need to use the troubled blu-ray disc.. Yay.
Sorry for the bother, all.
