I have just started digitizing my massive collection of movies and TV shows. My current external dvd reader doesn’t read blu rays and so I need to get one that does.
I’ve read a bunch of posts on here and articles online and they seem to conflict on whether any external blu ray drive/reader will held me with this.
I’ve read some stuff on here that some drives would require me to revert the drive back to a previous software or something along those lines, and to be honest, I have like zero faith in my tech illiterate as
Do all external blu ray players have the ability to rip docs discs to hard drive?
Re: Do all external blu ray players have the ability to rip docs discs to hard drive?
Fortunately for you, there is an entire sub-forum dedicated to those with "zero faith". Each seller lives in a different region, so you should be able to read their respective postings & decide who's best (most proximate?) for you. They can also answer any specific ??s you may have.
Drives for sale, Flashing Services, where to buy...
Re: Do all external blu ray players have the ability to rip docs discs to hard drive?
This is a good question.
Any blu-ray reader will work with MakeMKV. However, if the Disk AACS version is higher than the current MakeMKV is expecting, the drive can be revoked and no longer work as a blu-ray reader. Mike, the author of MakeMKV, created LibreDrive firmware for common LG, Asus and recently Pioneer drives which allows MakeMKV to work by ignoring whether the drive is revoked or not.
Some blu-ray drives have UHD (4K) reading capability, either officially or not (friendly drives). To use this feature on friendly drives you may need to downgrade the firmware to an earlier version.
There is a command line feature in MakeMKV that will rewrite the firmware for your blu-ray drive. Most people will use the graphical user interface that MartyMcNuts has provided.
This is just a basic sketch of an answer to your question. Read this forum for the details - especially the stickey topics. Some contributors will also sell you a blu-ray drive with UHD and/or LibreDrive fimware installed.
