Avanti - Missing Audio

#1 Post by wrldtvlr » Thu Mar 10, 2022 8:10 pm

Scanning a copy of the Kino Lorber BluRay of Avanti! and ran into an interesting problem. The main title and most of the extras were pulled with no problem. However, one of the extras (Avanti_t02.mkv - interview with Juliet Mills) does not show any audio. Any suggestions?

What does MediaInfo say about 00016.m2ts (in BDVM\Streams directory, only useful I think when you made a decrypted backup onto hard disk)

Not entirely sure how to interpret this, but it doesn't look much different.

From what one can see, I would assume, it is some kind of mastering error then, someone forgot the audio track. At least I would be out of ideas to check for more.

It's strange - VLC has no problem playing the disc with both video and audio.

VLC should be able to play 00016.m2ts from the decrypted backup. If you play that file directly, does it have audio?

VLC can indeed play 00016.m2ts, but there is no audio.

That implies that MakeMKV or MediaInfo isn't lying to you; there's no audio in that track. If there is audio to go with that video when you play the disc in a player, then it is playing something other than 00016.m2ts.

I agree! The problem is that I have ripped several thousand personal DVDs and BluRays for my Plex media server and never run into one where makemkv wasn't able to automatically pair the audio and video, and show alternate language/commentary audio tracks. I'm not quite sure how to locate/identify the audio track in this case.

Curioser and curioser. Handbrake was able to recognize and rip the audio track. I wonder if the Summary Tracks annotation "Foreign Audio Scan" means something?

Your Handbrake screenshots are showing a different thing than your MakeMKV screenshots.

The Handbrake screenshot is showing title 00000.mpls… that's a title (a playlist, if you will) that contains 1 or more segments.

The MakeMKV screenshot is showing 00016.m2ts… that's just a segment, on its own, not as part of a title.

If MakeMKV was ripping the same things as Handbrake, I would expect 'Source file name' in the 'Info' box of MakeMKV to say 00000.mpls.

I have the same problem with the BD: Gavin & Stacey - The Complete Collection - Series Two. One of the extras, 2:45 long, is extracted without sound, but the sound is there when the BD is played. Did you ever find an easy way to get the sound off the BD? I will try to get it with Handbrake, but as I have only used Handbrake to convert videos to h265, it may take me a while to figure it out.

Boy, that was easy -- I started Handbrake, selected the BD, selected the video by length (only one that was 2:45), and got an MKV video file, h265 compression, in a few minutes.

Does either of you get any messages in the MakeMKV log like "Playlist X is equal to playlist Y and will be skipped" or alike?
