Disc Drive Causing Circular Scraches

Post by strubdog »

Hello,
I have the Archgon MD-8107-U3 external drive. This seems to be creating circular scraches on my disc. I am usually able to open the disc in VLC but not MakeMKV. Has anyone seen this issue?

Thanks

yeah your drive is defective replace it and aske them to replace your damaged disc lg told me no but for some others got a check for the value.
also make sure to use both cables it seems the defective drives do this more often when they don't get enough power.

Okay, I am using the usb-c cable it came with. I'll try the other cable that came with it. That might make sense, some disc's get the scratches and other one's don't. It's weird. Doubt I'll get a refund, I have had the drive for awhile.
Thanks for the info.

It seems that changing the cable out didn't fix the issue. The power issue might seem valid. I went through a couple of disc without issue. My most recent disc caused the circular scratches. Disc reads in VLC, but won't rip all the files.

Thanks

I think I'll have to get a new drive. Does anyone have any recommendations for a drive that doesn't have this "circular scratches" issues?

Thanks

The desktop drives can do it too but much more rare.
I still recommend the BU40N over those you could get a pioneer but there alot less testing time with these but they are considered to be better

Doesn't my current drive (Archgon MD-8107-U3) have the BU40N?
Do you have a specific drive you recommend? I see in the list most of the BU40N are slim drives?
Do you recommend an enclosure for the desktop drive?

Thanks

i already said i recommend the BU40N i like it more then the lg/asus desktop drives.
you can go for a pioneer too they are regarded as better and no need to flash the firmware

I've got the same Archgon drive, and it's coastered a couple of my discs. It's a thin scratch, but since it follows the data path, the errors it produces are uncorrectable.
Doesn't happen with every disc, but it seems to happen when the drive gets bumped.
I've sort-of fixed it by cutting out strips of vinyl tape and putting it along all the metal edges on the tray, including some on the head itself.

I have since got a different drive. I got a more pricier LG external 4k drive. I have had it for a few months without issue.

Thanks
