2K VS 4K Blu-rays

Hello,

I have been having a lot of trouble deciding on which collection to go with. It seems like 4K has slightly better quality over 2K Blu-Rays mainly because of HDR. I just want to make sure that HDR is even supported with my process. If not, then it seems like it would make more sense to go with 2K Blu-rays.

When ripping a 4K Blu-ray in makeMKV, does that include HDR?
When playing a 4K .mkv file in VLC, does that support HDR?
I'm getting the NEC V754Q display which I believe supports HDR.

1. yes hdr in in the mkv
2. yes if you have your monitor in hdr mode but you may want to look into mpc with madvr
3. it most likely does but for that price range and size look's like it cost 4500+ why not go with an OLED for that price i personally think they look the best the lg 77 inch and is 3000 msrp and the lg c2 is coming out soon. unless there a specific reason you want that tv

I was able to take a snapshot of the 2K and 4K content in MI Ghost Protocol for a direct comparison.
I can't really see a fair comparison without a 4K display, but I like the 2K better.

yeah not a fair comparison because of the tone mapping making it look darker it would not appear like that on a hdr display as it has been converted to sdr

On your end, (assuming you have a 4k display) the 4k screenshot looks better???

In my case, I will need a 16TB HDD instead of an 8TB SSD for my movie collection if I go with 4k Blu-rays. Plus, I will need to get another 1TB SSD for my documents, music and picture files. Were as with 2K Blu-ray, I could fit my entire movie collection, plus all my documents, music and picture files on an 8TB SSD.

Not to mention, I wouldn't even be able to complete my 200-disc movie collection any time soon, (if ever) with 4k due to the lack of titles that appeal to me. Top it off with most of the reviews on Blu-ray.com saying 4k is just about even with 2k quality. Sometimes even being worse!

Now, I have read that 4k is slightly better than 2k mainly due to the HDR. That is why I wanted to make sure that HDR is something I can even achieve with my process. If not, then 4k is definitely not worth for me. Either way, I don't want to collect a mix of 2k and 4k blu-rays. It HAS to be one or the other for me. Do you honestly think 4k discs beat 2k discs every time? If so, by how much, is it really noticeable?

However, can you confirm that VLC will play the 4k .mkv files with HDR also? I'm not interested in any other players, what do you mean by mpc with madvr?

I like the NEC displays and currently have a 46" NEC display. I prefer them because they are more of a PC monitor than a TV. Plus, they are designed for constant use and last a long time. I was able to confirm the NEC display I plan on getting does support HDR. Although, I have no idea how it works and if it's something I have to enable. Hopefully, it's automatic and will use HDR whenever it receives a HDR signal. I think with a 75" display, 4k resolution is a must for a display that large. More important than the content being 4k.

I'm surprised no one know if VLC will play mlv files with HDR. I thought VLC was the most common player for mkv files. I will try to reach out to VLC.

If I can't get an answer from them, I will just go with 2K Blu-rays. Either way, I'm still supporting physical media and makeMKV.

i said yes vlc supports hdr
but it wont auto swap framerate and hdr like mpc with madvr will
and yes 4ks look better than 2k its only the odd few that look worse we already said this somewhere else on here.
and there is no reason to only have 4k or 2k get the movies you want in the best format available not a big deal your being ocd over the wrong stuff

it will default to hdr10, dv and hdr10+ are backwards compatible

Using MPC and madvr, do you think 4k discs are big improvement over 2k discs?

I know the potential is there in the 4k format and want to commit. Although, the reviews and lack of appealing titles keeps me away for now.

yes even if you are watching with horrible 3:2 pulldown at 60hz it looks better then 2k you really should match the frame rate.

yes its a noticeable improvement especially when you set it up right

i wouldn't worry about not being able to get the movies you want in 4K if they are only on regular bluray that fine they are not unwatchable they still look good 4K is just better again there is no need to limit your self to 1 or the other you can do both

mpc-be is still being worked on.
there is also jriver media center it is good its $60-$80 and supports madvr

MPC-BE / MPC-HC are still being developed. Not sure where you heard that one!!

When I go to the MPC-HC website it states the following,
MPC-HP has not been under development since 2017 and to please switch to something else.
Therefore, it looks like MPC-HP is officially discontinued.

What would you say are the top (3) mkv players, (free or one-time purchase) for Windows? That would be taking into account for 4K-UHD playback with HDR. I did use the mkv search bar to see if this was an existing topic, but I couldn't find one. Rather than start a new topic, I thought just to ask here.

I know you mentioned MPC-BE and JRiver Media Center, would you say they are in the top three? If so, can you give me one more player?

It doesn't seem that you think very highly of VLC, which is fine. I always thought VLC was one of the top mkv players, if not the best. I'm used to VLC and have been using it for years. I like the minimal interface, full screen option. I guess VLC is behind with some of the other players for 4K-UHD playback with HDR. My point is, if they end up releasing a new version this year, (which is very possible) and become considered one of the top players, I would rather just stick with VLC.
