You can't downgrade either as it just tells you your firmware is newer.
This could be (technically) bypassed. As of today there is zero need, but still...

Hi, I just installed a new Pioneer BDR-S12UHT and tried to backup the 4k Lord of the Rings 9-disc Trilogy. However, Makemkv invariably comes up with the attached - "Libredrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted. Backup failed."
I'd be grateful for any advice as all the documentation states drive is compatible.
Many thanks,
Bob

1.01 firmware isn't supported yet. Should be in the next day or 2.
Thanks M, let's keep our fingers crossed - LOL!

Now Sam - this is interesting. You have a 212-T. Is this supposed to read UHDs or was this just enabled via Libredrive? If yes, this would be great!! I always suspected Pioneer to just cripple the cheaper drives by firmware restrictions. Expecting your reply!

Coops,

My BDR-S12UHT is an official UHD drive and here is the MakeMKV info:

Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom2
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-S12U
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8F01
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-212T
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.00/ID43
DVD all regions: Possible, not yet enabled
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Disc Information
Label: WRECK_IT_RALPH
Timestamp: 2018-08-31 16:53:35
Protection: AACS2.0/C v61
Data capacity: 61.54 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM UHD
Number of layers: 2
Bus encryption flags: 80

Looks like the BDR-S12UHT and the BDR-212UBK use the exact same platform and firmware. My firmware is 1.00 but I'm sure if I upgraded it to 1.01 it would be 1.01/ID58.
Cheers :D

I'm cooling down since both of your drives seem to be UHD capable in the first place. Let's wait if there are some options to "upgrade" non-UHD drives in the future. Thanks, Marty!

I have a 212ubk. And it is definitely reading UHD's as I'm ripping one as we speak.

Great!! But Pioneer also sells triple layer drives w/o the UHD option in their advertisements. And I just expect them to be "crippled" by firmware. We will have to wait and see if these can be made UHD capable.

The 212EBK is advertised as triple layer but w/o UHD support.

All drives need to have "UH" in their names to be officially UHD capable by Pioneer. Like the BDR- S12UHT.

Yeah, can't get that model in Oz. Only the 212DBK which is only SL/DL. I can get the 212EBK on Amazon (import) but it is $170.00!! Not much point in that when the BDR-S12UHT is available in Oz and is a few dollars cheaper!

It may be slow, but, it's a smooth reading drive. 4x max so it took an hour for that 2 layer UHD. I'm getting some more movies tomorrow so I'll have some more stuff to throw at it.

Yep, "slowly but surely" can be a good thing!

Good news. So we have a new reader that is preferrable for critical discs.
