How to know if my firmware is encrypted

Post by Korvenwin » Mon Jan 10, 2022 12:35 pm

I've just bought an Archon MD-8107U3YC.

In my case the drive information is:

Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.02
Firmware date: 2120-12-01 17:16
Bus encryption flags: 1F

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

How can I know if it is an encrypted firmware to flash with the right method?

It's encrypted
Anything in 2020 is
LG pulled an Asus 3.02 reuse old firmware name but now encrypted

Thank you very much Billycar11. That was why the Marty's SDFtool didn't work. It detects my unit as not encrypted and in fact it does.

One last question:

After reading a few post about v1.03MK vs v1.0DE, I'm not sure witch firmware to choose. I don't think I will use DVDFab.

Which one do you recommend me?

If you have SDFtool Flasher v1.3.1 and the encypted firmware detection is incorrect, simply click on the ✔ or ✖ to toggle it.
Cheers :D

Yes, that was what I did and it was correctly flashed. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your work.

I have the same question, and a follow up. Just purchased an LG14NS40 and want to set it up to use with MakeMKV for Blu-Rays and 4k ripping to Plex. Was trying to follow the 2019 video/post to flash down to 1.02, but was not sure if I should follow encrypted instructions or non-encrypted instructions. I have attached screenshot of MakeMKV info, namely:

USE THIS?: 3. If you have a listed encrypted firmware you must use this command: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d “ your drive letter here Example: D”: rawflash enc -i “path to your firmware Example: C:\Users\Billy\Downloads\Downgrade-Enabled-Firmware\Auto-Flash\LG-Desktop-NS60-sleep-fix\WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin”

OR USE THIS?: 4. If you have unencrypted firmware use this command: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d “ your drive letter here Example: D”: rawflash -i “path to your firmware Example: C:\Users\Billy\Downloads\Downgrade-Enabled-Firmware\Auto-Flash\LG-Desktop-NS60-sleep-fix\WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin”

Also, confused about what flasher to use. I have the LG14 not the LG16, but can I use the same file? Your instructions and video use "WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin", but in the all you need firmware pack it downloaded something different (unless I grabbed the wrong one): HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin.

Thanks!

See guide below you likely have encrypted fw but check the known encrypted fw list first to be sure.
Yes you flash a wh14ns40 to WH16NS60

Many thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for the obtuse questions. Yes, I have read the links but still have some confusion.

First, you thought my firmware was encrypted but that I should check. I looked at your list, and found this:

HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH14NS40-NS50-1.05-N000900-212005061444.bin

This appears to be my LGWH14NS40 drive, 1.05, see below from MakeMKV, and I assume that the added N000900 is just superfluous, but wanted to make sure.

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH14NS40
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: KLZM8AF4753
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 14:44
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 25

Assuming my drive is encrypted, this is the firmware I downloaded from your site, which currently sits in my Download folder:

E:\DownloadDir\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

If I understand the instructions, assuming my LG drive is assigned D: in Windows 11, at the command prompt in the PS C:\Programs Files (x86)\MakeMKV directory I would type the following:

makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d D: rawflash enc -i E:\DownloadDir\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

Part of my question is to confirm that I should be using this firmware file (HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin) even though your example shows to use this firmware file (WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin). In other words, why are the files named differently? Are they the same file, and the added verbiage in teh same is superfluous? Or do I need to find the file specifically named: WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin? I have downloaded the mk-firmware-pack-20200720 and in the Old folder I do not see the specific file WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin, which you indicated that I should use with my LG14NS40

Thank you

If it the one in the all you need fw pack it's the right one
