makemkvcon said the firmware was updated, but the firmware version didn't change ?
I updated my drive with makemkvcon. It said it updated the firmware, but the firmware version didn't change.
Here is what I did.
Step 1
Download the firmware pack and uncompress it.
Step 2
Download sdf.bin. I found it here: https://makemkv.com/sdf.bin
Step 3 (optional)
Move the desired firmware and sdf.bin into an isolated directory.
Step 4
Open a terminal in the same directory as the firmware and sdf.bin Verify the files are there.
$ ls -al
total 2576
drwxr-xr-x. 1 me me 120 Nov 27 08:07 .
drwxr-xr-x. 1 me me 248 Nov 27 08:07 ..
-rw-rw-r--. 1 me me 2097152 Aug 31 2019 HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
-rw-r--r--. 1 me me 538976 Nov 27 08:06 sdf.bin
Step 5 Find your drive identifier
$ makemkvcon f -l
Found 1 drives(s)
00: dev_21:0, /dev/sr0, /dev/sr0
HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS40_1.05_212005061440_KLDL5BG1253
Step 6 Update the drive
]$ makemkvcon f -d'dev_21:0' -f./sdf.bin rawflash main -i HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
Reading input file HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS40_1.05_212005061440_KLDL5BG1253
Ready to write drive flash memory.
Type "yes" to continue, "no" to abort
yes
Operation started: Sending flash image to drive
100% Operation finished
Operation started: Programming flash
100% Operation finished
Done successfully
However, makemkv says:

Why didn't the firmware update ?
I ran this as a regular user. Did I need to run it as SU ? I reran it as SU, with the same result.

I don't see a step where you powered the drive off so it would start running the new firmware. Did you do that? If not, the original firmware is still running.

I did a reboot, but maybe it wasn't powered down enough. Let me try a complete shutdown.

I just did a complete shutdown, including removing the power cord. Same outcome. Firmware hasn't changed.

Re: makemkvcon said the firmware was updated, but the firmware version didn't change ?
I got it flashed using:
makemkvcon f -d'dev_21:0' -f./sdf.bin rawflash main,enc -i HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
Which guide ?
I tried using makemkvcon help. It lists:
f <args>
run universal firmware tool
No mention of what the args are. And there is no man page either. Just saying.
Thanks for the help and the tools.
