SDFTool Flasher fails to flash LG WH16NS40, 0x8F05C103
I am trying to "repair" a BD drive, LG WH16NS40, which I carelessly flashed to WP50NB40 a few weeks ago. The drive shows in my system's BIOS as WP50NB40, and it shows as WP50NB40 in Windows Device Manager (C:\Windows\System32\devmgmt.msc) on my Windows 10 Pro x64 system.
But when I use SDFTool Flasher (v1.2.0) to try to flash the BD drive (M: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WP50NB40_1.03_212005070929_KLTL2AK0859, according to the flasher) with HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061440.bin (from MK-Firmware-Pack-20200720\mk-firmware-pack-20200720\MK\HL-DT-ST\WH16NS40-NS50), I get 0x8F05C103. I've tried this without and with the 'enc?' option.
I've further tried to repair the BD drive with that firmware, but although the repair seems to run (green bar to end), the BD drive remains the same (ie, in BIOS and in Windows Device Manager). I've further powered off the computer and, and pulled the power plug on the BD drive.
Nothing seems to work.

You can't just flash desktop firmware over a slim drive firmware. Try using the recovery option in the flasher.FireMeUp84 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 3:13 pmI am trying to "repair" a BD drive, LG WH16NS40, which I carelessly flashed to WP50NB40 a few weeks ago. I'm trying just now. In the SDFTool Flasher, I've clicked Recover Drive. The flasher seems to want firmware to write. What should I choose in the dropdown ("Please select a Firmware to Write")? Before I tried HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061440.bin, with 0x8F05C103 as the result.

Let me correct my previous reply.
I got 0x8F05C103 in trying to Write. But a few minutes ago, I tried Recover Drive with HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061440.bin. I powered the computer off and further unplugged the BD-RE drive. Then I replugged the drive and rebooted the computer. But Windows Device Manager still shows the BD-RE drive as WP50NB40.

If you selected RECOVER:
A "file browser" will open so you can select the drive's current (wrong) firmware. This is so the boot ID can be obtained.
Click the second drop down box to select the correct firmware to flash.
You can now press the START button to recover the drive and flashing the selected firmware to your drive. Once the firmware has been flashed successfully, the application will refresh the drive list shown in the drop down box.
So, in your instance, you first select the WP50NB40 firmware that is currently on the drive. Then in the second drop box, select the WH16NS40 firmware.
Cheers

By "first post of the SDFTool Flasher thread," I assume you are referring to viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22896&p=94853&hili ... her#p94853 .
I flashed to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061440.bin and then to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin . (Note: That's WH16NS40 1.05 and WH16NS60 1.02; it's hard to catch the details.)
The tool now shows H: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS60_1.02_211810291936_KLTL2AK0859, and MakeMKV now shows BD-RE WH16NS60 Revision 1.02.
But when I insert a 4K disc, MakeMKV says

How old is your drive? If it is older than October 2015 and does not say SVC: NS50 on the sticker on top of the drive, then that drive is too old for UHD and should never have been flashed in the first place.FireMeUp84 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 5:08 amBy "first post of the SDFTool Flasher thread," I assume you are referring to viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22896&p=94853&hili ... her#p94853 .

The sticker on top of the drive says it was manufactured February 2021.
(And I just went through powering off the computer, and unplugging it, for about a minute. Same problem with MakeMKV.)

Ok, so your drive is correctly flashed then. Can you try another UHD? You may have to give the UHD disc a good clean as sometimes they have an invisible film left on thenm from manufacturing. Also, try a BD and DVD to see if they are able to be read.
Cheers

Re: SDFTool Flasher fails to flash LG WH16NS40, 0x8F05C103
I've now tried 3-4 4K discs, at least 1 HD disc and at least 1 DVD. No good.
I've noticed that the drive takes rather a long time in trying to read a disc, certainly in comparison with my LG Slim BP60NB10, which has been working like a charm. (I've kept the latter unplugged in my experiments with the WH16NS40.)

Ok, dunno what to tell ya. Perhaps the lasers are dead? How long have you had it? Can you return it? If you can return it, flash it back to original firmware by following the steps below:FireMeUp84 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 5:54 amI've now tried 3-4 4K discs, at least 1 HD disc and at least 1 DVD. 1. Using SDFtool Flasher, flash the drive to WH16NS40 1.04-MK (from the "old" folder of the MK firmware pack).
2. Grab the original WH16NS40 1.05 flasher from viewtopic.php?f=16&t=24443
3. Flash the drive with the official flasher so that the drive will then be on the original WH16NS40 1.05 firmware.
Cheers

Re: SDFTool Flasher fails to flash LG WH16NS40, 0x8F05C103
I found no 1.04 binary in the "old" MK firmware directory. So I used HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS40-NS50-1.03-NM00600-211711211653.bin (1.03) instead. I then used the original WH16NS40 1.05 flasher. At the end, I rebooted my system, as I was prompted by the flasher.
Here's what MakeMKV says now (note that I still have the failure to read an inserted DVD):
Drive Information
OS device name: H:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS40
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: KLTL2AK0859
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 14:40
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 76
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 1.05
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)
No disc inserted
I bought the WH16NS40 from Amazon, "Condition: Used - Acceptable - Cosmetic imperfection(s) bigger than 1" on bottom or back of item. Missing manual. Item will come repackaged." I guess I learned a lesson here. I can return the item until 28 October 2021, which I shall do.
