Second copy of same Blu-ray hangs during ripping

Post by Niggi Biggi »

I’ve been trying to rip a Blu-ray disc several times, but it always fails on the exact same spot.
This is strange to me, because the disc I have been trying to rip most recently is the second copy of the same exact Blu-ray edition, which I bought in the hopes that it was simply a faulty disc giving me trouble.
Unfortunately for me, it seems to be more complicated than that, and as such I have provided logs for you to read.
Hopefully, it will be of some help:

On the “first” attempt, I ejected the disc since it took forever to finish, but like I said, it fails on the exact same spot as the original copy:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.16.4 win(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as C:\Users\User/MakeMKV_log.txt
Using LibreDrive mode (v06.2 id=EC0D0F39EDA7)
Using direct disc access mode
Evaluation version, 30 day(s) out of 30 remaining
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.

I’ve tried cleaning the disc, obviously replacing it, and I’ve increased the “read retry count” as well.
I haven’t tried I different drive, but it seems incredibly unlikely to me that it’s got anything to do with my drive at this point.

How is the drive connected to your computer? And how is it powered? Sometimes USB powered drives can attempt to do things that make the drive need more power than a single USB port can provide, which leads to all kinds of weird behavior.

Code: Select all

Error 'OS error - {No Disk} There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive hs' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom0' at offset '5680404480'
Messages like that qualify as weird behavior. :)

It is an internal drive - LG BH16NS55 to be specific.
Like I said, I ejected the disc in this instance because it took forever to rip.

When rip gets into the state where it is taking a long time, can you tell which file it seems to be having trouble with? During a rip the top of the MakeMKV window has an 'Information' box with a lot of details in it.

Here's an example I've obfuscated a bit.
rip.jpg
rip.jpg (38.6 KiB) Viewed 57918 times
The "Source file" line near the top will tell you which .m2ts file MakeMKV is currently working on ripping. The "Output size" is an effective proxy for how well the rip is going. If the growth of the output size slows down, or seems to come to a stop, the "Source file" line will tell you which .m2ts file is giving your optical drive trouble.

There is a difference between when things just slow down and when things seem to get stuck. In my experience, if the output size is increasing, even slowly, there's still a chance that the rip will eventually finish. If things seem to stall, then often I'll end up with a hash check error or some other related error.

I mention all this because your earlier log indicated you were attempting to save two titles. It is possible the file giving the drive trouble is only part of one of those titles and the other title might successfully rip. Before starting the rip, if you highlight a title in MakeMKV and then look at the "Segment map" line in the Info box on the right, you can see if there's a segment that corresponds to the file that the rip seems to be stalling out on.

For example, 00501.m2ts (for the picture above) corresponds to segment 501 from the picture below.

I know this won't solve the issue, but it might help get us closer.

I have multiple, different optical drives I use to rip. It has been my experience that some discs just don't work well in some drives. Generally speaking, I rip everything in my 'main' drive, which is just the one I use first out of habit. If a rip fails, I next try the disc in my other drive. More often than not, the rip is successful in the other drive. If it isn't, I clean the disc and try again. On very rare occasions, I come across a disc that won't work in any of the three drives I have access to even after multiple cleanings. This is when I replace the disc. So far, in all those cases, of which I've only had a handful over the years (though I had one last week), the replacement copy has worked.

It seems like you've done everything except try a different drive. A different drive or perhaps an alternative program (as ham6817 suggests) might be the remaining things to try. Personally, I don't have any experience with any ripping programs besides MakeMKV, so I can't make a suggestion there.

When rip gets into the state where it is taking a long time, can you tell which file it seems to be having trouble with? During a rip the top of the MakeMKV window has an 'Information' box with a lot of details in it.

Here's an example I've obfuscated a bit.
rip.jpg

For example, 00501.m2ts (for the picture above) corresponds to segment 501 from the picture below.
segmentmap.jpg

I know this won't solve the issue, but it might help get us closer.
Here's some information from another unsuccessful rip:

First, I took a screenshot of the "information box".
makemkv_information_box.png
makemkv_information_box.png (83.48 KiB) Viewed 57829 times

Secondly, a picture of the point where the rip runs into problems. It sounded like the drive was constantly seeking.
makemkv_title_information.png
makemkv_title_information.png (97.17 KiB) Viewed 57829 times

At this point, the drive ceased to seek, the estimated remaining time kept adding up, and I decided to stop the ripping process by clicking the "STOP" button.

Lastly, here's the log from before I manually stopped the ripping process.

name of the movie would probably help
The name of the movie is "Flåklypa Grand Prix":
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Flaklypa ... ray/89386/
Have you tried ripping if with a different program.
Which program would you recommend?
I'd like it if there was a free alternative to MakeMKV, but so far, the alternatives seem to want to make you purchase the software.
Come to think of it, I really wish MakeMKV was FOSS, since it's such a great piece of software most of the time.

FOSS stands for "free and open-source software", which is software that is freely available for anyone to edit, modify and reuse.

Has anyone had any further progress on this? I have the same disc with the exact same problem, I'm stumped as well.
