ASUS BW-12B1ST

Post by muels7 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 12:26 am

So I have been using makemkv for a while now. Today I bought my first UHD disc and decided to look into ripping it with makemkv. I found that my drive(ASUS BW-12B1ST) is on the UHD friendly list. However I can't get it to recognize that the UHD disc is in the drive. I am at firmware 1.03 if that make a difference. I can't find any posts about this drive except that it is in the friendly list. Does anyone know if the firmware is the issue with this drive and what version I should be at?

It has been previously confirmed that your drive is NOT friendly after all. Listed as friendly incorrectly in a few places. I believe including this forum on a few lists here.

Read this:

https://club.myce.com/t/the-ultimate-ul ... /399725/15

You need the newer model of the drive which is:

Asus BC-12D2HT

With the CORRECT CLEAN firmware. NOT any version that has been patched up by Asus. For this drive I believe it's 3.00.

The Asus Firmware with the loophole is version 3. (e.g. 3.00 , 3.01, 3.02, etc). Depending on the drive model and manufactured date newer revisions of 3.02 have been patched and 3.03 is completely patched.

Asus drives with Firmware version 1 (e.g. 1.00 , 1.01, etc) are too OLD and pre-loophole. They do not have the hardware to do this.

EDIT: People have been having a hard time finding BC-12D2HT with the proper firmware. You are better off buying one of the other more popular models that are UHD Friendly. There are forum members who are assisting with flashing/purchases of these drives in clearly marked posts which could also assist you in this.

Well that is disappointing. I have had this drive for about 6 years, maybe more, so its no big deal. I just saw on one of the other UHD posts that my drive was listed. Guess not. Will have to see if I can find one of the models that is affordable.

I'm not sure I believe this - the BW has a close cousin the BC that has at least one confirmed use out in the wild and another that I've seen and has since been deleted.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/co ... t/dz02nfl/

I am going to try and flash my BC drive this weekend and see what happens.

Best case I have a UHD drive
Worst case I have to buy a new drive which if this doesn't work I was going to have to do anyways.

I must have some one of a kind Voodoo drive, as I've ripped 21 of my UHD discs without issue with the OEM version of this drive ("C" instead of "W"). Only thing is I can't seem to make disc backups--just rip titles to MKVs, so maybe it's "sort of friendly"?

The BC-12B1ST is a good little drive. As pointed out it can be flashed with the BW-16D1HT friendly firmware. If you should need one of these I'm happy to supply one.

So i'm looking into updating pic related, i've found firmware 3.11 for it but i'm curious about what you posted. Do i just use the ASUS ODD FW Changer to flash DE-ASUS BW-16D1HT or will i need the official FW? Do i lose any functionalities like disc writing? Thanks.

I have the same question. I have tried to flash my ASUS BW-12B1ST with both the ASUS flasher and the SDTool. Neither one seems to work. They both just hang and/or do nothing. What am I missing?

I cannot even get it to flash to a uhd friendly firmware. Is there anything else I need to do before I try to flash with the ASUS flasher? Right now when I try to flash, it opens the tray, then just seems to hang. Nothing else happens, no progress, nothing. If I exit out of the flasher, the drive still shows the original firmware (1.03), and drive works fine. So, I havent corrupted the drive. Am I missing a step?

DO NOT FLASH a drive that has 1.03. This drive is too old and you will brick it!

I'm assuming my drive is just too old. I was able to speed things up, however, with setting MakeMKV's speed control.
