DVD always freezes at 500.5 MB

Post by hamburglar » Sun Jan 18, 2015 12:54 am

I am trying to put the DVD of "Mary of Nazareth" on my computer so I can convert it and watch it on my tablet. I own this movie and have no intentions of pirating or distributing copyrighted works, I just want to watch it on a device other than a TV. I don't know if this thing has some sort of crazy copy protection, but it's not exactly your blockbuster movie. It's a small budget Catholic movie that was released in theaters for Church groups and such, so I can't imagine this thing would have some state of the art copy protection. The movie is published by Ignatius Press.

Anyway, whenever I try to create an MKV file from the Title that has the movie, it freezes at 500.5 MB. When I try converting directly in Handbrake, it can't read the first title. I tried using trial versions of AnyDVD and DVDFab. AnyDVD just crawls to a halt after detecting errors in sectors, and DVDFab doesn't even recognize Title 1.

How can I get this to work?

You're asking us to guess right now. Please give us some facts to work with; see the FAQ link in my signature.

If the other programs are detecting errors, MakeMKV is probably showing you errors, too. Common ones are caused by dirt and scratches on the disk, making it impossible to read some sectors. When you are trying to rip a disk, the software strives to give you an EXACT copy, where a stand-alone player would simply skip over the error, since you'll only notice a brief video or audio glitch for small errors.

Whenever I have a disk fail to read, I clean it with Pledge furniture polish and a soft cotton cloth. Spray on, work it in with a CLEAN finger, then polish off with the cloth. 90% of the time, this will allow the ripping of the disk. If not, the next steps involve use of resurfacing techniques.

I followed your link and have attached links to a zip file of the IFO files as well as the log. When I play the movie on the DVD drive on my laptop, I notice that sometimes the audio doesn't match up perfectly with the video. I don't know if this has anything to do with the errors.

I couldn't find a log file but I created one from the information on the MakeMKV window after the failure. I've attached it here.

Here's how to turn on logging: https://www.makemkv.com/faq/item/8

Looking at your current log, MakeMKV was having trouble reading all the titles on the disc, with many errors like this:

Code: Select all

The source file 'BD-RE ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.10' is corrupt or invalid at offset 397312, attempting to work around
It eventually got through that but then failed when ripping a title with this error:

I can't interpret those debug codes… but I can tell you that most of the time the problem is usually that the optical drive is having a hard time reading the disc, usually because the disc is dirty. Try gently cleaning the disc & give it another go. Like Woodstock mentioned above, MakeMKV is trying to make an exact copy and is thus fairly sensitive to slight disc imperfections.

Thanks, I tried with a 2nd optical drive and it still failed. I sent the .log file to support@makemkv.com so hopefully they will be able to fix.

It's not looking good IMO since I just tried again after 3 days and still doesn't work. It may be a disc that can't be ripped?

I once had a problem with a strangely mastered DVD in the past.

I used AnyDVD and Handbrake. AnyDVD decrypted the drive and Handbrake was able to eventually rip it.

Also, you can see if someone you know can try to rip it as well in case the off chance there is a problem with your computer. .(doubt it but at this point it couldn't hurt. )
