N00b questions

Post by jimdodgy »

I've somehow avoided Blu-ray since forever but have just been gifted the Harry Potter collection. I don't really want to splash out on an AV style unit so think it would be better to get an external drive, hook it up to my Raspberry Pi 4 and rip them so I can watch them with Kodi.

Am I in the right place lol? Is my plan sensible? Can I buy any old Blu-ray drive?

"the right place" depends a lot of which parts you're looking for.

Pretty much any USB-capable Bluray drive will work with MakeMKV, but there are some that offer more options. Even if you are not going to do UHD disks now, you might want to consider spending the extra money for a UHD-capable USB drive. There is a topic in the UHD section dedicated to drive selection.

The newest version of MakeMKV for Linux has RPi support.

Kodi support is something you'll have to check on the Kodi support forum about.

I also recommend however big of external drive you think you want to buy, buy a bigger one. You will run out of space eventually, so buying more TBs now will make it easier.
