The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection

Post by Chris Kelly »

I purchased two identical sets from Amazon--one in January, and another a few days ago. How can the same 4K UHD Blu-ray included with the set result in the same error on an LG BU40N AND an LG WH16NS60 when copying to my SSD, as well as stop in the middle of playback at random spots when playing directly from the disc with VLC with the "System," "System32," and "VLC" items checked in the MakeMKV Integration Preferences? I enjoy the benefits of HDR when playing 4K UHD Blu-rays. However, if copying my 4K UHD Blu-ray discs to my SSD and playing the discs directly to obtain HDR is making my life this difficult, I am wondering if the benefits of HDR are worth all this agrivation and I should consider giving up on 4K UHD Blu-rays and HDR, and sticking with 1080p Blu-rays. Below is all the information I was able to copy and paste from MakeMKV. Attached is a text file containing my system information.

Try cleaning the disc really good with some alcohol and a very soft microfiber.
Also does it fail in the same place on the same disc on both drives or very close to the same

Since I can't read small print, I had someone check out the discs in both sets. While the discs don't appear to be dirty, dusty, scratched, smudged, or sticky, the microscopic pits the data/video is stored on seems to be more pronounced on the 4K UHD release of "Vertigo" included with both sets. I don't think cleaning can really take care of that. Maybe Universal Home Video should be made aware of this if that's a problem for set-top players and drives.

I just got this set today, and was able to rip all 4 UHD discs. I did have a couple of odd issues.

Both Rear Window and The Birds failed to load the first time. I got the fast disc spinning problem (that I haven't seen in ages). The second attempt for both worked.

On Vertigo, the disc wasn't recognized at all on first attempt. Worked on the second attempt.

Psycho worked on first attempt.

I'm using an Asus BW-16D1HT connected via SATA running Linux Mint 20.1.

Nice to know I'm not the ONLY one with SOME kind of issues here. I was using an LG WH16NS60 which came with 1.03. So I flashed it to the MK edition. Now, I cross flashed it to the ASUS BW16D1HT MK 3.10 firmware.
I'm going to wait for AnyDVDHD to add the keys for the discs in this set and try ripping them with AnyDVDHD and see if that works.

I actually only had seen that on DVDs. Wow.

My second copy of "Vertigo" is still giving me trouble whether crossflashing various drives or using respective MK firmware whether with MakeMKV or AnyDVDHD. Should I exchange the entire set at Amazon again? Or should I see if Universal Pictures Home Entertainment could replace the one disc for me?

you tried on the BU40N?
make sure you use both power cables on separate usb circuits
or get a high powered hub like this one if you get time out on logical unit.

I have the BU40N installed in a Vantek 510 kit. To insure the best speed, I'm using a cable with a USB 3.x Gen 2 Type C male on one end, and Micro USB 3.x male on the other end. My laptop only has one USB 3.x Type A female port on it anyway.

these drive dont even exceed 2.0 speeds thats completely unnecessary use the original cable with both usb plugs in the thinner one does not need a 3.0 port its just for extra power

Actually, when checking the VLC option in the MakeMKV integration screen, the "Vertigo" disc stops playback in random places whether using the BU40N or WH16NS60. I thought I left an error message in my original post.
The error I left in my original post happened with the BU40N and WH16NS60.
